Surround Sound
If I get the EPIA M10000 motherboard it has a built in sound card which looks like it only has one output but it says it can be 6.1 surround, if I want to hook this up to a four channel amp and a sub amp, do i need to get a new sound card, or is there something I can do to the board?

There's a daughterboard that has the additional ports for the other audio outs. I also believe the LINE IN is used for one of the outs, but don't quote me on that.

Well, I'm sure that it can't do 6.1, but 5.1, that's a different story. The three ports on the back are the 6 channels. The rear and the sub/center, replaces the line-in and the mic.

Here, I'll spoon-feed you, n00b: http://www.viaembedded.com/product/3/4/EPIA-M_v1.40.pdf
There's the link tot he manual. It's Appendix 2, on page 73.
Oh, and I was wrong about the daughter card. Sorry about that.

Noobs comeing here expecting some good-hearted reg to give them an easily-found answer just sickens me.
You want us to do your research for you. Do you consider us your *****es?
This isn't even anything obscure. It's right there in black and white.
OK, Perhaps you bought the board OEM-style or used off EBay and it came with no manual. I can see that happening.
But you don't even think to locate the manual and see if the information is there? There's something very, very wrong with that.

i dont care, im used to forums, and when ur on one for a while and people ask questions that u feel are retarded its easy to want to vent. but this was posted under the NEWBIE category and he should learn that there are going to be some people that just dont know s**t, i saw a post on someone who asked what a head unit was and no one flipped out on him like this, some people just need to calm down and if they dont have something helpful to add then just dont add anything just my .02

The Epia M10000 lets you change the three ports(Line In, Line out, Mic) to 5.1 Surround. It is done in the Software(XP), not in the bios(I think). If you are running XM with the XM direct box, you can't run 5.1.
Also:
You can't run Navivoice, it requires a MIC, your MIC line will be an output now...
Here's why:
THe line out on the XM has to go into a line in, somewhere. If you take the existing Line in and change it to output, you will have no place to get sound from your XM direct. It is up to you, of course.
You could:
Buy an external SB audigy(USB) that has line in, line out, Mic, 5.1 out, etc.. But I bleive some people are having problems with these....
It is clearly stated in the manual, how to set up 5.1.
Unless you plan on watching DVDs, 5.1 is pretty useless...(in my humble Opinion, aka IMHO).
Good luck in your search, I hope this helps.
You may try searching using terms like 5.1+EPIA or surround+EPIA.
The search feature works pretty good here.
SInce I'm here.....
I think we need more than a FAQ/Noob section.... we need a Noob guide to mp3car.com with a glossary of Acronyms, terms, common phrases etc....

i agree, and thanx for the info
didn't even think about voice commands with the nav (is it any good? the one on my avic-n1 blows) i might have to look into a seperate audio card then, i dont really care about having the 5.1 deal, i just need three outputs to control my front, rear, and sub

5.1
Well apart from DVD's which are encoded with 5.1, how would one go about getting music onto all speakers in the car without some form of splitter box??
As you may have read in my other thread I'm trying CS II but it's very unreliable..
Is watching DVD's in 5.1 really that good in a car??
