I have a screen with the normal video out connector (rca type) is there anyway of converting to a vga connector?

Its a pioneer screen, but was from factory so dont now which model!
Is it possible to split the wire in a vga connection? OR would s-vide be better?
Will quality be shocking? Screen is £70, so $125

Use the S-VGA output. Change it to RCA and plug it into the monitor. VGA is not compatible with the RCA video (NTSC) signal.
Before you decide to use this as your main car computer interface, hook it up to a computer with an SVGA or RCA output and see if you like it. Expect it to be fuzzy and difficult to read the smaller text (anything under about 16 point).

You should be fine with dvd, you may have some problems with reading the file names in winamp. Same problem with reading street names with gps.

Any way of improving it?
Would it be any better if it was just straight s-video and no rca to s-video?

I don't know how much clearer the text would be with just s-video, I wouldn't think it would be much of an improvement. If you really want to be able to read text I would suggest you buy a lcd with vga and sell your current lcd on ebay.

for me s-video makes a lot of difference.. it reduces color bleed by keeping the RGB signals seperate..
I used s-video on my TV for a media center and it worked well.. RCA also works but it's fuzzy..
VGA is the way to go but s-video can do the job. just make sure it's an s-video source..

The resolution on a computer is simply so much higher than RCA/S-video can support that there is an UNAVOIDABLE LOSS OF QUALITY from VGA to RCA. You can watch a DVD or maybe use something like MediaCar (now RoadRunner), but beyond that, it just doesnt work. On a smaller screen it will be even worse.
All in one units use their own proprietary interfaces or design the images with s-video units in mind.
That said, if you want to do it cheap and good, the best way to go is whats called a "scan converter". It will convert VGA to RCA - whereas those cables on ebay will make you kill yourself. They dont work unless you have a video card that supports TV out on the VGA channel. [SIDENOTE - SEARCH BEFORE YOU POST, I ASKED THIS SAME QUESTION LAST WEEK AND GOT THE ANSWER I AM GIVING YOU]
