Search function issues...

im a newb on here and a newb basher on another sight. so i am very familar with the whole "search" issue.
the problem i run into when everyone screams the forum mantra "SEARCH", is that the search function on here (as far as i have deduced) only searches single words individualy and not a topic of more than one word. Example: "CD drive install" brings up 10 or more pages with every thread that has the word "CD", "drive" and "install", but not the combination of them.
This really makes it hard for us newbs to do an actual search of common topics and glean some usable info if we hve to seach thru hundreds of threads that have no relation to our question.
I recently got the "SEARCH" anvil dropped on my head for asking about "Best frontends". even though i did a search, it brough up every post with "best" and "frontend", quite a lot, making it very unrealistic to actualy do a "productive" search.

Please tell me if i missed something in the advanced search options that allows me to search a topic based on more than just one word...

either try searching for "Best Frontends" (with the quotes), or "Best AND Frontends" (with or without quotes).

Well, the "Best front ends" question is a lot like the "Best computer system" or "Best GPS software" question. For this particular hobby, each install is custom and "best" is really up to the individual user.

The opinions you'll get will reflect what's "best" for each of us, not for you.

So, you got flamed for that one. Don't give up. You can still ask other questions and get reasonable answers. Poke around the newly created "FAQ Emporium" forum and if you don't like what you see, make some suggestions about how to improve it.

And go ahead and ask questions. If you think you're gonna get flamed, post it in the Newbie section and remind everyone that there's a reason you posted it there.

thanx guys. i'll try the "and" next time.

i can handle the heat of the "search" flames, its just difficult when you're so much of a newb that you don't even know what terms to use in the search, let alone how to phrase it. But im getting there and learning in the process.

thanx again...

One thing you could do is post a question like: "I don't even know what to search on. Can you give me the right search terms for [insert topic]"

just try the "Best Frontend" search term. i just tried, and while it doesnt search the phrase exactly, it makes sure the resulting threads have both words in it. i got 15 results. the "Best AND Frontend" gave me your 10+ pages of results (mainly due to it exlcuding Best for some odd reason).
