Full Size Spec Pc? Will It Work
OK hi all new to forum been watching for a good few months, My question is this I want a full size spec pc in my car size and fit is no issue here, its purely a show car, Im looking to run a full size multimedia 17" tft screen dash mounted, the reason i want full spec is i want POWER i'm talking full on doom3 and halflife 2 power, but what is the best way to power the base unit and the monitor, I know this is totally away from what you guys do. I was curious to wether the power supplies you guys use for you carputers will power my pc or if not best way to adapt it,
thanks in advance

when you're pullin' that much power.. your choices will be limited...
[] DC/AC Inverter
now... your only question is how big.. some of the better ones.. start at 400w..
<> do some math.. get an idea of how much wattage you'll need.. and buy accordingly.. quality first.. or you'll keep paying for it.
the DC/DC converters wont' handle the power you need UNLESS you get a few of them and divide them among various hardware bits of your kit.
cheers

Thanks I really aprecciate your help, i have looked into the power inverters and i found a 1000w power one for around 150 quid or 300 dollars (sorry about my guess on conversion rates, lol) would you think this will be sufficient power to run the pc, surely the tft monitor can be run from the car supply anyway they are only 12v?? or is that complete rubbish i speaking lol
thanks in advance

There are some web.based calculators that can help you get an idea of your power requirements will be. but 1kw should be enough for nearly anyone.

Well.. that may be true.. but the DC off your car's batter or alternator is unregulated.. and thus.. somewhat dirty.. --meaning low or high voltage or current conditions can happen.
Is your alternator up to the task of running a 1kw inverter?
not that it will draw 1kw unless loaded to that limit..-- the potential is there just the same.
cheers

Hey Pengy666,
Yes, it's doable! I've done it in my 88 Jeep. My screen is smaller though 12.1" TFT, same one the Police Cruisers use.
Right now I'm gathering info so I can use a SDC to start/shutdown. It was getting to be a real drag to do it manually.
Thx, Phil
