I just installed Windows XP Multimedia Center Edition, and out of the box, it boots in about 10-15 seconds. I have no idea whats been changed, but its very impressive. The only thing thats turned off in that version is that it cannot join a domain, other than that its a real 'XP Pro' version. If you put a diferent key in, it will be a plain XP Pro install without MCE, but I did not test the bootup time with that. The OEM version I have (MSDN is nice) also allows installing a tablet version of XP as well, which might be better suited for a carpc with a touchscreen display. I might give that a try once decide on how to get everything hooked up.

A couple of things:
- Microsoft has changed this, I think more recent versions of MCE (including the one that ships with MSDN), now use XP Home as the underlying OS. There a some subtle differences that may matter to some people.

- I don't know of any OEM version in MSDN that changes the install based on the product key, which disk is it? (Can you give me the month/year and the title?)

This is a copy from MSDN that I just downloaded. Its en_WinXP_MCE_2005_cd1.iso, en_WinXP_MCE_2005_cd2.iso. On the second CD, its got tablet and MCE on it, but if you use a pro key it wont ask for CD2.

And I know its Pro because I can remote desktop into it. XP Home does not support that. It just cant join a domain (cant use fast user switching when joined to a domain)
