first car pc project

I am debating about using these parts. If anyone has any input please by all means tell me. I have a sony vaio pcv-470ds laying around and it has been updated to 512 mb ram and has a pentium 4 cpu but I think it is a 2.8 gig but not sure. It originally came with windows me but I added windows xp pro shortly before stop using this pc for work. I am considering using this pc's mother board which has dual hard drives but I have no idea what mother board it is or anything as I am not a guru of pc. I am considering buying the opus 150 watt power supply if it works or can be simply modified-HENCE THE WORD SIMPLY. The pc also has a dvd rom and a cd burner which is oem equipment and I am hoping to use both, Why I am not sure as I have never burned a cd in my life but I think I need it because I dont know any better. I am wondering about updating to a sound blaster 2 sound card but I think this one is pre built in the mother board and it has a mic in, headphone out and aux in input all 3 using miniplugs. I am going to be using this pc as the audio source, with 3 rockford fosgate punch 1000 powering either boston acoustic speakers and a couple of 12 inch subs or infinity kappa brand. I am undecided on the moniter as I think I want touch screen.
Also this pc will be using the serial port to tune the holley efi.

The car has a huge dash area and the dash is completley gutted out. I will be fabricating the dash from scratch as most of the interior. The car is being powered by an aluminum 351 windsor with a clevleand stroker crank forged steel, 8.1 forged pistons and 427 cubes with twin t 4 turobs and a t56 6 speed.
This car will only see warm summer days as I live in wisconsin and will be stored inside a heated warehouse for winter.

I know I want the pc to control all the audio/video, efi, more then 1 video screens (undecided how many) possibly temperature control and rear view and front veiw cameras.

Any info will be greatly appreciated on whether to use this pc or use other items or what parts to use for multiple screens etc. I am open to all input but please make it simple as I am still not familiar with alot of the parts. I use pc's for cnc work and I know I like big powerful systems.

I would suggest before taking any other steps, Read the FAQ section on the site which will explain everything in details for you. Then it will give you an idea of how you should go about planning your system. Also figure out what you want the carpc to do for you, this will also help you in your quest.

I wouldnt suggest you go with dual hardrives, just got one nice sized one. Heat will become an issue as well.

As far as your processor goes that will also generate some heat so unless you have a cooling solution think a little less horse power.

i used desktop parts for mine, Im in the process of building a slim plexiglass enclosure for everything.

Good Luck.

A little googling on your machine says that you have an Asus p4t motherboard, socket 423 p4 and rambus memory.Max speed is 2 ghz,but more than likely it came with a 1.5....exactly the same board I have in my truck.
You can use an opus on this setup, but,I'd suggest going with a single big drive to cut down on heat and to avoid stressing the power supply.

Again, you don't need one as you can transfer files via a network setup. If you want one,and I like having mine,go with a single slim slot load drive, less power,no tray to break off,and better looking,IMHO.

Great card,I have a zs myself.Just remember to disable the onboard sound if your board came with it.

Cool,I'd go with a bigger screen, say a 10.4 or a 12,but anything bigger will be hard to make look like it flows with the interior.

Man,shows you how long it's been since I built a ford small block....I thought the biggest you could reasonably go was a 406,that must be one thick block and one hell of a crank, lol.Twin turbos? I prefer superchargers myself,I hate lag, but, either way, you're going to go like a bat outta hell

Normally I go supercharging but this project I wanted to try something a bit different. And perhaps a little bit more extreme.

I think you are correct in the p4 was 1.5 gig. Anymore I cant remember what each pc has as I have 5 different ones I work with every day.

I am running a sound blaster 2z in my main work pc and it sounds amazing but it is hooked to the klipsch 5.1 surround and dual 8 inch subwoofer setup and it blows my harmon kardon/infinty home theater away as far as sound quality. Both are extremely nice but the sound blaster in my toned deaf ear sounds better lol.

Thank you all for all the good info you have given. It is greatly appreciated.

one more question on this build up project. I read several posts and did some searching and read the faq's but I am confused about one thing. If I run more then one monitor in this car by doing a split vga plug and it mirrors the image. Can both screens be touch screen and work or does one need to be the main working and the other one is a slave?

My goal is to have the main monitor as the only control and the rest as slaves to it. NOT TO Offend but I mean the word slave in no negative ways I couldnt think of a better word at the time I wrote this.

I have aproximatley more then 2 feet deep by almost 2 feet high room in this car and the entire dash will be fabricated from scratch. Please note this car is not intended for daily driving and will only prob see 1,000 miles a yr at tops.
Basically I am wanting to have montiers in the grill in front of the car, in the rear of the car and in the dash and cameras mounted in several outside places hidden as much as possible. The monitors will play videos, movies and also images from the cameras at car shows and can be independent or together. Whatever is easier.

You can just get a normal VGA thats not touchscreen. Becuase you just want one of them to be able to control the entire system correct?

SLAVE is the appropriate term, machineshop. Your cultural sensitivity is duly noted.
