1999 Chevy Lumina 3.1 Starter Problems

First off, Im not the greatest with cars. I decided after doing research to try this one myself. So i got a starter to replace mine. I didnt know till after i pulled mine off that this one is smaller. I replaced the wires to the best of my knowlege (the 3 to the same post i pulled it off of and the small one on the small post). So after reattaching the starter i went to put the negative battery cable back on. All of a sudden the car started turning over. WHen i called they said to check the wiring so to the best of my knowlege its even to the fact on the big post i believe i got the colors back on the same order (purple, orange, black) So any help is appreciated.
