Will this setup work and what PSU to use??

Hey,
I'm pretty new to the carputing thing, but not to computers or electronics.

I first wanted to do a P4 and have a computer I could use inside too but after much thought i decided that would be too much of a pain.

I want to be able to do music, movies, OBD-II and gps.

This is what I came up with..
Motherboard=M10000
RAM
Hard Drive
Input-Trackpad
CD/DVD Drive

Then idk what screen I will be using yet.

So my question is...
Will all of these components work together and is there anything else I will need.
And then what PSU should I be looking at??
I want it to have startup and shutdown "controls" so like not the PICO. I just don't know how many watts i'll need.

Thanks for any help and just ask if you need anything clarified.

-Seth

Here's a handy FAQ that you should read: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=68636
It adresses your specific question.

When you're done with that and have made your PSU decision, you might check out these, as well. There is no such thing as too much information.

Ya, I've read both of those links and some off the FAQ Emporium.

I was trying to find out the wattage of the VIA processor but I couldn't find it but I was looking some more and I saw that maybe 15 watts was right.
Is that right??

If so, then ya, i'd prolly go with the PicoPSU and the uSDC.

And another question, whats the big differences between the M10000 and the MII12000??? Is it just the different onboard video and the RAM type?? And if so, how big of an advantage is one over the other??

Thanks

-Seth

The PicoPSU won't regulate the 12v line, for one. If you have any other devices that utilize 12v (like the hard drive you specified), you'll fry them. I recommend against the PicoPSU or the PW200M and its variants. Others have no problems with them, which is fine. I've never used one, but based on the way they operate, I couldn't recommend one in good conscience.

You're better off getting an M1ATX or M2ATX, or maybe an Opus 120w. You'll have the startup/shutdown capability. Teh Opus has battery protections. Plus it's all built into one unit, simplifying the job of wiring everything together.

The big difference between the M10000 and M12000 is 200mhz.

K, thanks.

Ya, I did a little more looking last night and found a power "simulator" I think on EPIA or something like that, dont remember exactly (and at work). It said like the max I would be using was at like 65 watts.
I also saw the M1-ATX which I think i'll go with because it's cheaper and has the shutdown controller built in and such.
Also, I think i've decided to go with the 12000 because of the quicker speed and the better video. I read some reviews last night saying the 12000 had a noticable difference in that area.

Thanks for the help.

What about if the setup was Carnetix P1900 and a picoPSU 60W-WI (wide input range) to power MII-12K with usual setup 2.5 HD, slim CdRW, usb devices etc, would it still not work?

say I use 18V out put from the P1900 which will output ~18.5V is the 12 V rail going to output 18.5 or 12 V?

I wouldn't recommend that at all.
First of all, you could save money buy getting an M1ATX and have more functionality.

Second, the PIcoPSU doens't regulate the 12v rail, so you'd be feeding 18v to components that need 12v. That would be bad.

In a response from mini-box;

Dear Sir,

PicoPSU-60-WI will have 12V output no matter of the input as long it is between 6 and 26V.
The other 2 PicoPSU's will have at output what they have at the input, because they require 12V regulated.

Best regards,
Cristi Ciubotaru.

So if all you need is a 60 watt PSu this version of the Pico is a good alternative. I have the P1900 but my morex 80W can only take 11~12.5 V

So might end up using the picoPSU 60 WI to replace becuase i do not need another shutdown controller and such.
