I suggest latching onto a Linux distribution (they're free to download), setup a test machine, and start going through
Running Linux from O'Reilly. It's a great resource, and will assist you in accomplishing specific tasks in Linux.
It does
not get into programming, but it will give you a good platform.
If you're already past this level, then ignore me.
