It actually CAN be done with a device that emulates the central phone system. But that device is several hundred dollars to buy, and probably close to one hundred to build.

So go to a computer store and get a pair of $20 EtherNet cards, or a $5 null-modem cable and then use Windows direct cable connection.

If you've got an old copy of Pro-Comm Plus (Back in the BBS Days) you could use that.

But Aarons right, buy the NIC's.

you could get a USB Network Cable, but I;ve only seen them for $50. Its cheaper to go with network cards and a cross over cable. If you shop around you could prolly find a network card for free after rebate.

if you have a double phone plug (e.g a plug that enables you to have two telephones in one wall socket) , then just plug both modems into it. set you computer to be a dail up server (if your using windows , just look it up in help) , then the other one just have it dail 1 number (my friend and i couldnt do it otherwise) , make sure its set to not wait for the dial tone. but network cards are probably a better option , but its good to know these things in case your in a bind. you could also buy a null modem cable (i think ) , or usb networks are another option.
