Like teh subject says..
My bro has a cheapish CD player that he has dropped twice (hmm...) and one day when he was using it, running it off teh power adapter, (not battery) he noticed that if he "hovered" his hand over the player, not touching it, but close, the music would MUTE.... the CD would continue spinning, and the disk was still being read, but no music.. :P lol... any ideas??? he he... I have no idea...

Sounds like a broken trace on the PCB, most likely due to grounding or filtering. The interference from his hand (and the radio waves picked up by his body) confuses the electronics.
