how my day after work was spent with Verizon Wireless

I would suggest having the text feature blocked on your card. I just recieved my first bill that should have been about $120.00, I opened it up and was $373.52 . I called Verizon and the first lady said I had to of subscribed to them in order to recieve them. She said that I subscribed to a texting service that sends jokes, horoscopes, ringtones ect.
"Its a broadband card If I wanted to check my horoscope or get funny jokes by text I think I could find them on the web for free" is what I said.
Then I asked if there was anything she could do, and she said she could give me the number to the place and their website and if I didnt want the charge then I will have to reply stop to all the messages. I was furious and said just to cancel the card, (ive had it a month) And said my money could be spent just as easily with another provider!
She responded with your going to cancel your servuce because of the text messages? I said that and the fact that theres nothing you can do. she said ok thanks for choosing verizon wireless have a good day! Click..... she hung up on me! now I'm not even furious Im 10 shades of pi55ed off, and I call back to cancel the broadband and my cell a different guy answers the phone askes what he can do for me and I say that I want my services canceled, he askes why and I have to go through the whole story. Then he states that he can block all texts that go to that number and askes if he takes the charges off if I will keep my service. I said that would be great and told him that the woman I spoke to said she couldnt do that. He was unsure why she said that, and that it was no problem to block all my texts and wipe the extra charges clean. I asked him how this could have happened and he said that their broadband numbers are recirculated from old cell numbers and the previous owner could have subscribed to the services. So if you havent had the texting to your broadband card blocked I would get on that because how many people check their text messages on the card? I didnnt even know you could get text messages from the broadband service.

At least it was only $373.52.

Out first bill with Cingular was going to be around $220, and then every month thereafter around $110 or $115 for 3 phones. 2 of the phones had 1000 text messages (in and out combined). The first billing period though was only 3 days from when we signed up to when that period was over, which they never told us either, so it would have been $220 for 3 days. But anyways, when we get the first bill, it was way over $700. We basically fell out of our chairs, and then saw that some number was constantly sending my phone text messages. I was not receiving them though. I have a smarthphone and 1Gb mmc card in it where all the texts once received are stored there. I think I would remember if I had somewhere around 5800 text messages in 3 days.

We had to call up and explain to them that there is no way in hell any phone can receive 5800 messages in a span of 3 days. That would mean 80 an hour 24 hours a day for 3 days straight. And I only had received 1 "welcome to cingular" spam message.

After we got that "resolved", it kept happening. 5 digit counts of text messages. One month in the 70k's. So we told them to block my phone from receiving text messages. Well it sure worked on my end, because I wasnt able to send any. But that same month, the charges were still there.

It wouldnt go away. Damn cingular. They finally fixed it, about 7 months later, but it still haunts me late at night!

I used to work customer service for Telus, I've been the person on the other side of that conversation.
Basically they're right, someone sends a message to these 80808 (or whatever number) that are on the television commercials and gets jokes every day. They didn't read the fine print that was on the screen for 1 second saying how to cancel or how much it costs because it's impossible to read that fast. So they get their bill, freak out and cancel their service. The number sits in aging for 90 days to make sure whoever used to call that person has their new number, it then gets released to you, and the text messages haven't been stopped. There is absolutely no way for the phone company to do anything about this currently, there's no communication between these small SMS companies and the large phone companies. The SMS company bills your carrier so they have no choice but to bill you. Or take the hit. But the carrier does have a way of blocking the SMS from that type of source, however anyone that tries to send you a text message through a website now will get denied. But it's not a big deal. The lady was probably fed up with all the 40 year old parents calling freaking out about their 9 year old's cell phone bill being $300 when the 9 year old signed up after seeing the commercial and the parents don't want to take responsibility. When in actuality they SHOULD take responsibility for their kid signing up for that. No matter what the circumstance, it's their responsibility. However in your case, where the previous owner had signed up, it's not your fault. She should have credited it but probably thought you signed up for it.

This is assuming you didn't sign up for it, I've talked to people who said they never, but when I check their account, they've been with the carrier for 2 years and only in the last 30-40 days they were receiving these so I KNOW for a fact they signed up for it. In this case it's too bad, so sad. Pay your bill. But after being a client with the carrier for only a month, I do believe you. Too bad for your luck.
