maybe is he using a different encoding than the actual one in your browser ?
This usually happens when fonts are not installed, if it's kanji or cyrillic fonts or sort of and you did never downloaded this kind of font then you get some garbage displayed instead of readable sentences.
He's typing in Chinese or some other language with a different character set (typically oriental or Cyrillic languages).
Those of us who don't have the Chinese language installed see the question mark train.....
