Magical leprechans and Unicorns

I am a dj by hobby but my laptop sometimes bogs down when im using a piece of hardware called Serato Scratch Live which basically is an external device that listens to timecode fed into it and slows down speeds up and scratches a mp3 in realtime.

the Serato box runs off of the USB bus. I have it plugged into my laptop and I also have a IDE to USB2.0 converter with all my songs on it. on occasion it will bog down and freeze up slightly which isnt good.

So i was thinking of getting an NAS drive and running the mp3 hard drive off of that and leave the USB clear for only the Serato box. but I was looking at the specs on some of the NAS drives and they seem to have more thoroughput availible on USB. Im confused what to do cause NAS will offer 100MBps but USB offers 400MBps.

Should I get the NAS enclosure or will my results likely be the same or should i transfer the ide music to a sata drive and run that in the NAS. or try Sata and USB? whats a better option without spending too much and getting the most bandwidth?

If you have a gigabit ethernet port, use that! If not Firewire. Firewire seems best for heavy transfers of files!

It depends how your software reads the mp3's. Ethernet is ok for throughput, but a nightmare for access times (protocol dependable).

Maybe do a test with a bunch of mp3's on the internal disk, just to see if that solves the problem.

If so, use firewire if available on your laptop, or a pcmcia card with usb2/firewire/sata, depending on what you have...

jc the software has the whole mp3 available and cached once loaded in case i need to sample or scratch back to the beginning of the song
even ram might help now that i think of it but it already has a gig and is a dual core

so basically either way keeping both on usb is a bad idea right.
im a newb with dual cores its amd i wonder if theres a setting in the bios or something hmm

USB is very limited on bandwith, so your assumption of 1 on there is best. If you have the space for a PCMCIA card, Iwould get a firewire version. Seems like the simplest fix. Also make sure that dual core is running XP and not Vista. Vista bogs this stuff down, and its stupid security measures makes everything in general slower. So if you need speed...
