DVD Burner-reputable non-coaster making ones

In the past I always had good luck with TDK drives. Then I went to a Pioneer and it has always acted kind of flaky. Now it makes too many coasters with different brands of media.

Looking at a sony drive right now, anyone have any brands or models they like to stick to?

Just need to burn CD's and DVD's. No Blu-ray.

sedtc has a little shameless behaviour in the past
i've had the most luck with my trusty NEC-3520a for writing dvds exclusively and a cheap Sony CRX-320e to read cds and dvds as well as burning cds. i believe the nec line has been replaced with the sony nec optiarc line which i know very little about aside from mixed reviews. the sony cd burner is okay but can be a bit touchy with crappy media.

it has been my experience that good media makes all the difference. verbatim discs have been my media of choice for both cds and dvds for the last 5-600 discs or so. after screwing around with various media from varying sources, i have learned to stick to the verbatims. taiyo yudens are excellent as well but i can't buy them locally on a consistent basis.

It's been a long looooong time since I've made a "coaster". I stick with LG drives and memorex media, I can't even remember the last time I created a coaster.

Wait wait... yes I can. I flashed the firmware of a 4x Lite-On DVDrw with firmware from an 8x and tried to burn at 6x... needless to say it didn't work.

Lite-On are teh crapz anyway.

Like the crazy frog on top of me I use LG since years, I don't have any problems, I usually use the cheapest dvd's I can buy to burn.
