There cheap here, around $300 - I was replacing the $100 window units every
year they just cant hold up to the rain, dust and dirt were I live, the fan motors
burn out, so I got a 10,000BTU Portable unit, seams to work fine,

Ether unit will make lots of water, its a steady drip, and if you ever left the water
drip in the tub or sink with the stopper in, over night, it over fills, so its a good
amount of water coming out of the AC

I would just get a cheap Portable unit, but even with the portable unit, you have to
install something like a dryer vent, and a drain,

If you do go with the window AC, your going to have to use painted plywood, and use
silicone to water proof around the edges, and the window AC needs to be able
to drain, so it needs to be at an slight angle for that,

I was always worded about the AC falling out, or something or some one getting in, so
I put screws threw the plywood into the window and window frame, all the way
around, you can use a small drill bit to pre-drill the holes, it helps a lot to do that
keeps the wood from splitting, just use slightly larger screws than the drill bit

Yeah I actually went to Home Depot, and Compared the $100 5000BTU unit that I would need $100 of extra stuff to half *** it, to the $300 10000BTU open box portable with an adapter for a horizontal window.

So I got the portable. Set it to max cold when I brought it home and it was like an igloo when I got home.

It came with an exhaust vent to the window, and a silicon hose thingy for the drip. We are in colorado so it is very arid, and there was a plug in the drip hole thing. So I just left the hose unattached... 48 hours and no soggy floor, so it must not be making any water, or at no more than what is evaporated. I am not setting it to dehumidify, since there is no water in the air lol.

Ok... it is hot outside. I can't stand it. I want some cold Canadian air!

I need to find a reasonably priced way of pumping 8000btu's (ish) of cool air conditioned air into my room.

I live in the basement, where the window is actually ground level. I also live on Cheyenne Mountain. This means I regularly have 500lb bears, wolves, cougars, foxes, deer, you name it inches from my window.

So most of the air conditioners I have seen are those window ones that are meant for the vertical windows. I have a horizontal window. So this means that however wide the thing is, I have an opening that is width by (window height - air conditioner height) tall. I could put plywood or something over it, but I dont want to drill into the house. So anything will be very loose/insecure. So this brings us back to the wildlife problem. If it is big enough to warrant a piece of wood, it is big enough for some animal to get into my bedroom. Or a person for that matter.

So I looked at portable air conditioners. Those are frigging expensive. So no.

So wall units... I am not knocking a hole in the wall...

So back to window units. I figure I can put one not in the window and still make it work. Am I right with this?

If I were to put the entire unit inside, then place some duct work on the back of it, and basically vent it out the window, I think it would work, but I dont know how powerful these things are or if there just isnt enough pressure to send the air out the duct work, and not just escape through the vents heating the room instead. I image this rectangular duct piece on the back of the unit, then it gets to the window where it becomes a very tall very skinny piece of metal to go through the window, then back into regular and place it a few feet from the window. Then I can keep my wooden stick in the window so it doesnt open more than an inch, and block that inch with metal keeping the stupid bugs out.

Other option is to place the unit outside, and vent it inside with basically the same setup metal wise, but the duct would go on the cold air part not the hot exhaust part.

I have never owned one of these things, so I am just going off of what I think should happen.

And as I see it, this is going to produce some water as a side product too right? So if the unit is inside, this duct work is going to fill with water unless it is sloped outside right?

It might just be cheaper to blow up the sun. I am going to start a petition....

Yeah their server crashed. They have stupid software that resets the server's clock to 2001 on a crash. It crashed, it is now 2001 again... They know about it, enough people have emailed them already...

Anyways, it was a good deal. It was $399 for a new one like it. I went in to get a $99 unit and some duct work and came out with this monster. lol. I hate home depot...
