Do you know why all those problems exist? Shoes cause the muscles that support your balance, and keep you centered from every developing.

Maybe this animation here may make some sense: http://www.newtonrunning.com/run-better

In actuality, from everything that I have read, and have experienced for myself, all the worries you have get corrected once your body adjusts, and builds the proper muscles and tendons from proper running.

You are totally missing the point. It's not just about hurt feet, it's about the under developed physique that shoes have caused that cause a whole host of other problems.

I run on grass, and dirt too. As for sharp objects, I'd just pull it out, and keep on going, but no incidents yet. The thing to understand, is that your overall way of walking/running totally changes, and you are careful and agile by default.

Also, take a look at this VERY insightful article, that has excerpts from the book, "Born To Run" by Christopher McDougall: The Painful Truth About Trainers

I'm still running barefoot twice a week, and am building up my legs, and feet to gradually. I'm also walking, and going everywhere I can barefoot. The only time I really wear shoes now is at work.

I give you credit - i tried running barefoot on sand years ago - not too comfortable after 10 minutes. I cannot image doing anything barefoot in baltimore.

Enforcer, as a matter of fact, I did go to the mall last month barefoot, but I assure you, I'm not a bum. Regular clothes, just no shoes.

Heather, running barefoot on the sand for 10 minutes probably isn't going to be comfortable, because your feet, and the muscles in your feet and legs are not used to it. If you have been wearing shoes all your life, then it is a transition to strengthening those muscles up.

you should try running barefoot in a downtown area next .. or maybe up near a vista point ... or lastly perhaps try running near a junkyard or recycling center! Please post photos

The thought of doing that in Baltimore is scary.

Now why would I want to run around a junkyard? No scenery there for me. Running downtown is no problem, as I work downtown, and walk down here all the time. I also run around my neighborhood barefoot, and even on the side of the highway behind my house.

"Great fear you have....fear leads to the darkside..."

The thing is, if you can't go barefoot, try these: http://www.vibramfivefingers.com

Here are the ones I want, but they are on backorder til December:

Quote:
The Men's KSO Trek employs the most aggressive Vibram fivefingers sole yet, 4mm of stone-bruising protective EVA midsole, and a tear/sweat/bacteria-resistant kangaroo leather upper to make for the most rugged and durable answer to trail running, hiking, cold-exposure and general outdoor use yet — all while "keeping stuff out."
