Would this work with my radar detector?

I have a regular windshield-mount radar detector that I would like to use, but don't want to have on the windshield! I was wondering if I could disassemble it, mount the sensors in out-of-sight locations, and move the display screen to be somewhere near my gauges.

I could DO all of this myself, I just can't find any information regarding the removal and relocation of the sensors, i.e., if they don't work with wires longer than xx" or something.

I know you can buy radar detectors designed to have bumper sensors, but I won't be buying anything new. I was hoping to use what I already have and make it do what I want.

Could anyone provide me with any input about this?

Wow, forget that.

The sensors are much larger than I had anticipated. Even if they would have worked remotely, the trouble taken to mount them in any sort of hidden fashion would not have been worth it.

Why not just move the display and keep everything else together and hidden away?

Thought about that, but the radar detector itself is too big for me to hide very well and I would lose the rear sensitivity completely.

I saw a guy at a car show once that ripped off the display and routed it to an auxiliary display and then patched on a digital compass. It didn't look perfect but looked a lot less suspicious. Maybe just disguising the unit would do the trick? Or did you want it completely out of sight?

If you had an overhead console (I think thats what they call it) you know the spot where the map lights and garage clicker thing that I could never figure out how to get it to work, then that would be the best spot. By putting up there would allow it to be in plain sight and yet be completely incognito... and you wouldn't loose any of its functions... Might more work than what you wanted to do but its a thought..

It's too big to hide somewhere, but it's not too big to obstruct your vision when it's mounted to the windshield??

It sounds like you have a V1 as you're talking front and rear. Trying to extend the sensors is strongly discouraged as apparently it affects the capability of the remaining hardware to track threats etc.

Having said that they seem to work just as well almost anywhere on the center plane, windshield, hanging from the roof, rear shelf etc. I saw a really neat install inside the middle head restraint in the back of a BMW once.

Bear in mind you can cover it with fabric to disguise it with little if any performance loss, you can then use a remote display/control to monitior it or even install a stealth display in your dash or mirror.
