The IT Job Market As of Today

Hey guys,
I know that I can come to you guys for advice on a whole lot of things. Basically, I am at a point in my job where I can not proceed any further with what the company has to offer. I am the webmaster for a small business just south of Atlanta, GA. Being that the current IT Market is quite dry, understatement, would any of you happen to know of another possible field that would good for me to go towards without falling behind in the process.

Here is a link to my Resume if anyone would like to make suggestions of what to add, take away or to pass on to others please feel free to email me at steve@attentiontodesign.com

Right click the link to save it:

Also, if anyone in either Atlanta, GA or Nashville, TN happens to know of a job opening that might be in my area, please let me know. Thank you for all your help!
Steve Snyder

i would put your job experiences first. Also go into more detail about what you did on the job. How it helped the company and if it increased productivity saved them money etc.

You ought to do like above and move job exp up first.

Elaborate more on the systems admin side of things ... make your job experience more than just bullet points, describe.

Make the skills a lot smaller and job description a lot bigger.

NEVER EVER SAY SOME KNOWLEDGE OF ... either you know it or don't. Even if you're not a wiz at Linux, that will come out in an interview. Never say "some knowledge" ... you know it, write it.

I see a dozen resumes a day and yours can be much better ... remember as an employer, one cares more about what you did at other places than what skills you got.

Thanks for the pointers Vikram, I will make the changes here in just a bit. I really appreciate it. Let me ask you this, "some knowledge" part, Lets use Linux for example, I know how to get around and tinker with it and such but I cant program scripts or other things, how would one put that in a resume? Or should I just leave that part out?
Thanks again!

You should differenciate your degree of knowledge, you just used poor wording. If you list something on yor resume and only know it a little and do not disclose that, it could lead to a disastorous interview. Use something like "Exposure to yada yada yada" This implies you have a working knowledge of something but you do not claim to be an expert. Becareful not to exagerate too much as again it could cause problems in an interview.

My 2 cents.

thats a lot better. I'd re-do the objective though. Make it geared more towards what you want to do with your career.. Not just work in a friendly work enviroment. If you are open to different careers.. as you see a job posting you like change the objective to meet that posting.

Sorry, been busy.

Yeah, I feel bad, didn't fully elaborate.

Like if you know Linux enough - ls, ifconfig, vi, etc that's ok to write as knowing linux (no degree neeeded)

But, I'm saying this assuming you aren't applying for a UNIX Admin position. Like I was a System Analyst, mainly Windows, I knew enough Unix to get around, install stuff, write a basic script. That's enough for me, but I would never apply to a Unix wiz admin job.

Where I work, we have standard resumes we need to write (govt contracts, etc) ... and I like how we get to have a area that says Windows OS ..... 10 years
Unix ..... 2 years
Veritas Netbackup .... 1 year

It allows me to put stuff like Nessus (awesome security scanner) and say 6 months.

So that might not be bad, it's a good way to say Linux, but then be forth-coming about your experience.

Hope this helps,
Vikram
