I sometimes feel this way about customers...
Like the one that someone keeps having their AUTOEXEC.NT get deleted on a daily basis, causing their all-important DOS-based app to quit functioning on their nice shiny XP machine (An AthlonXP 2400+ with 96MB RAM... 96MB?!?!?!?!)...
But do they take my recommendation and get a virus scanner on the computer? Noooooo.....

Let's not forget that all inclusive manual. Its chocked full of tastee information! With such good stuff like "HOw to turn on the machine!" and "How do I TURN OFF the machine?!" and who could ever forget "HOW DO I USE THE F'ING MACHINE, I'M A COMPLETE MORON!!"
If you, for example, buy a fax machine and you have to call customer support to find out HOW TO FAX.... Follow these easy steps:
1) Disconnect all wires going to the machine (this means unplug, unhook, pull out, no connecty to anything-o!)
2) Place hands on both sides of machine (those meaty things at the ends of your arms, yeah those things where you put your $400 watch and 255 karat diamond ring, yeah those)
3) Grab machine and lift above your head (the thing that is exponentially empty)
4) Release and repeat
These simple directions should be applied to many of our population. But...
In other words DarqueP.... I feel your pain Brutha!!
A Toast for those in the know:
For all of us damned souls in tech support, I raise a glass of (insert random alcoholic beverage with such goodness) to you almost nightly and wish you all would not have to suffer any more than is necessary, for we are the front line of battle in the war against ignorance and stupidity. Thank you friend. It's great to know that somebody somewhere is having a great drink in honor of our unsung struggles.
Then again, think of this: if people were to suddenly get smart and start learning how to use the shiat they bought, we'd all be out of a job.

Bill Gates started this. When he started making an OS that would make computers usable by the masses, he had no idea how many average guys would have a job... nay CAREER keeping those masses and their PCS functioning.
All so they can get their email & pr0n...

While I agree that Windows had a large amount of responsibility in this, I think that we're also being forced to deal with the results of a society that never really HAD to learn anything beyond their chosen career track to survive. For many folks, they learn only what their parents paid for them to learn in college, and the rest be damned. Past that, they either pay someone to make their problems go away, or whine, cry and scream in a tantrum until someone caves in and does it for free, since whatever happened was entirely someone else's responsibility. If the dork went to download some of the aforementioned pr0n, and it came complete with a virus, it was still the tech's fault for whatever abstract reason the dork can come up with.
Ack. Our society is being allowed to get lazy and stupid, in an era where a word can be spelled however you feel it should be spelled, and reality TV is the staple of any household TV schedule. Microsoft will learn a lesson the hard way though. People are getting smarter, bit by bit. They have to. After the dot-com bubble burst, there are suddenly less techs around, and now endusers are having to learn for themselves why "their Microsoft modem isn't working". They are starting to learn that Windows as a whole is old and busted, and needs to be completely replaced. By the time Longhorn comes out, all you techs watch out. There will be a surge of support issues about it, and then it will fall off sharply when people realize that there really isn't anything different about the "new" software they just bought for a few hundred bucks.
The future's in network and data security folks, not enduser support. Keep your eyes open!

I hated one thing more: teaching people at a public service how to use windows NT
That was long ago, I said goodbye to tech support and am doing servermanagement and security now

I have a question for you tech support people:
The cupholder on the front of my computer broke, where can I get a new one?
You know, the cupholder that opens automaticly when I push the button.
