Yah. A fresh install is the way to go with SP2. most times you get it to work fine, but if it gives you trouble, a fresh install is really the best solution.

Yeah, uninstall it and go back to using SP1. Then turn off Automatic updates so that it doesn't keep downloading SP2 to install. Only problem is you would now have to remember to perfom windows updates manually. What ****es me off is that SP2 RC2 worked perfect for me, then when I got the official release all sorts of problems. Obviously Microsoft made some major changes after RC2. I'll be waiting for SP3 or the next version of Windows (Longhorn).

lgbr has a little shameless behaviour in the past
I run SP2 in my car, and I HATE IT. Good god. Its the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Pop-ups from Microsoft are just as annoying as from any other site. It takes control over your computer, insists you install virus protection (and wont shut up about it unless you stop the service), and has a barrell of other annoying things.

Glad I"m a linux junkie.

Also screwed up my Dr. Divx and Nero MP3 encoder. Both of which now are fixed due to newer releases of these apps.

It keeps telling me that my firewall status is unknown, even though I disabled the Alert Settings.

SP2 works great in all my machines, including my car.

hombre, is it giving you that message in the system tray or only when you go to control panel and click security center?

In the system tray only. I have to disable it everytime I reboot.

SP2 is the "Idiot's Service Pack".
Microsoft wants to make sure you know that you don't have all the latest tools and features installed that they think you should, even if you don't need them.

I just spent an hour helping a friend's aunt get that crap uninstalled. It just decided to start DLing in the background, without asking first, which hogged her AOL DIALUP connection for a good two hours, then took another 30 minutes to install, only to completely kill the start menu, and her printer. When I mean it killed the start menu, I mean that the whole taskbar was gone, save for a tiny sliver of it at the bottom of the screen. There was no way to get it to popup. Windows key, CTRL-ESC, the works, it was all fried. On top of all that SP2 was all popping ****e up about "YOU DON'T HAVE A FIREWALL INSTALLED!!! YOU DON'T HAVE ANTIVIRUS!! OMG!!1!1!!one"
She didn't need a firewall (dialup, duh), and she had Norton AV 2004 installed. Stupid service pack. Anyone who knows what they're doing with WinXP does NOT need that damnable thing. I have a router (firewall) and Symantec's Antivirus installed, and I have yet to have cause to worry about ANYTHING. Of course, NOT using Internet Explorer helps alot, but cmon people. SP2 is making our service tech filthy frigging rich in service commissions. All damned day long we have a stream of people bringing in their Dell, HP, Gateway etc systems to have them re-loaded after getting nailed by that voracious, annoying turd. ACK!!!!

Thanks for this thread btw, I needed to vent a little myself....

Untill you get owned by one of the massive security holes it's designed to patch.

They need an SP2 light version. Fixes security holes but leaves the baby face stuff turned off.

To be honest, I don't have a single problem with it on any of my own systems. I've had 1 client computer not take SP2 well.

This leads me to believe that something has to be broken in your system to begin with, for you to run into problems.

Not broken, incompatible. Too many weird conflicts with all the mess of drivers possible to be installed...

Good idea about SP2 lite though. Too bad MS isn't in the habit of listening to its customers.

I'm sorry but most of you don't know what you are talking about.

The alerts can be turned off in the control panel.
Automatic updates is turned on or off only if you tell it to.

And yes, even on dialup, you need a firewall. I got a worm on dialup
10 minutes in, and that was at 14.4k on a cell phone.

A lot of you guys problems is you guys like to tinker and **** with
things you shouldn't, and when you install patches, it ****s up.

Go figure.
