Help with website exposure.?

Hey guys,

Ive done a website for a friend who wants it to turn up on yahoo, google and MSN search sites, but other than the typical 'registering' with the search engines how do I go about getting it to move up in places on the search return?

Even if it costs money, Ive just never done it before.

Do META tags play a big role?

Do not spend money on those advertising firms, it's a waste. You should know that it can take months for websites to show up on a major search engines. the more popular it becomes, the faster it moves up in the results. Get the website linked from other websites (don't do it here you'll be shot). Cross link your own website. Make the pages worth reading, dummie pages will not help. Meta tags are always good and worth while... see here for more details

backlinks play a HUGE role in getting you bumped up the charts on google, etc

and just for the sake of a shameless plug... who does your hosting?

Anyone familiar with Overture? It is a pay service, but it seems to be the most widely used to become a top 10 search result?

Overture is a paid advertising service similar to google adwords. Either way it's a pay per click type thing and it isn't going to help you get search rankings you'll simply get advertised on sites that display their banners and have content that pertains to the key words you have selected.
