Reason #8763 why I will never move to california

http://www.theksbwchannel.com/money/4123489/detail.html

I can almost understand charging a nickel for every plastic bag, but 17 cents for paper bags too?

I thought our taxes paid for recycling - tell me again why we need to pay additional fees to support it?

It's because 17 is a good round number.

this is the part that gets me

The city's environmental commission is expected to ask the mayor and board of supervisors Tuesday to consider a 17-cent per bag charge on paper and plastic grocery bags.

Their goal is to reduce plastic bag pollution. Environmentalists say plastic bags jam machinery, pollute waterways and often end up in trees.

This is like that telephone tax passed (that you still pay) to fund the Spanish American war.

Paper bags cause more pollution than plastic bags. You just can't see
the effects as easily. Paper bags cause massive air pollution and water
pollution in their manufacturing process. Much, Much more than plastic.

Freak'n politicians will do anything to raise more money for their pet projects / slush funds!

Guess it's time to invest in reusable bags and containers. I wouldn't be surpised if several members of the SF Environmental comission sit on the boards of the companies that produce reuasable bags.

One life .... one bag!!!!!

Here's a lovely organic Hemp bag. When it wears out you can always smoke it (in an environmentally friendly manner of course).

...come to think of it, I'm truly puzzled now. The city recyler (used to call these guys trashmen) requires me to deposit my animal feces (technical name for dog ****) in a bag before I dispose of it in the recyle bin (trash can). I wonder if there are any nice resuable bags for this purpose? Will they rinse it out and bring it back to me? Muahahahaha!

surely that is only white bags as they need bleaching etc. Brown bags should be pretty good.

To be honest i think it is a good idea as people (especially Americans - sorry but it is true that your nation uses more energy per head than any other - but you are not alone and all of use in developed countries waste far too much) will use an excess of something if it is available. The thing is the only way to stop people doing anything these dasy is through money. If you saw they were giving somehting away in a shop you would take more than you need - everyone does it. If Xenarc decided to give screens away - eventhough you might only need 1 you would take as many as you could carry and it wouldnt be to sel as everyone could get them free.

Plastic bags are so harmful to the environment and wildlife. We live in a disposable age where it is easier to throw something away and pick up a new one next time we need it. Shops have tried giving money off if you take your own bags but people see carrying bags around as scummy. The only way is to charge people for bags. If you go on your weekly shop to the same supermarket why not just put your bags int he car with you and put them in your trolly and reuse them??? If everyone did this jsut a few times the effect would be huge.

I don't agree with doing it for things like clothes stores and takeaways and corner shops but defintiely in supermarkets it is a good idea. But they should maybe make them a bit stronger with thicker handles and then they would be more suited to being reused.

Well, if we're already screwed: http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science....ap/index.html
What does it matter if we throw a few plastic bags out the window?
