You are not the only one.
I made that same decision years ago. A guaranteed job/income to payoff college debt while gave up other chance/opportunity.
I got a little lucky a year later because of a very understanding/good boss. He was a 2 months new boss (old boss left) to the yearly review date. He look up my stuff and the first word he asked me "What they pay you less than a QA"? I'm a programmer. Within 2 month working together, of course he knews what I could and couldn't do. Well, the paycheck after the next, my salary was double. I mean 100% increase. Well, that was during the dot boom. The boss got layoff year later including other 60% of the staff. I also got layoff 4 months later with the rest of the staff. The company shutdown the door a month after.
During that almost 3 years with the company, I was able to payoff 10K CC, 15K student loan, and some $$ borrow from parents years ago for the purchase of the Supra. And able to save enough for a house down payment. I was able to do that cuz I own a freaking reliable car. Do most of the maintainance, repair work myself. No drinking, no clubbing (little party here and there), no carPC yet , no gold-digger g/f. I live with my parent and paid their mortgage (in return of the money I borrowed before).
Another lucky thing I have was haven't go into unemployment yet. I was able to get the current job before getting layoff from the previous one with a huge drop in salary. Well that was much, much better than getting unemployment check. And you know, it really tuff to get programming job in Socal after 9/11. In fact, I was working 2 fulltime jobs for a bout a month. Man that was tuff.
wizardPC, kudos to your debt reduction process.

It won't be too hard to get her debt down, b/c you'll have more income combined, and you can continue to live just as frugally......
Good Luck though

We're getting married in June of 2008, so I'll be debt free for about a year when we get hitched. Unfortunately, all my extra money from being debt free will be going to cashflow the wedding.

yep. She's in Grad School right now, and she estimates she will have about $40,000 in student loans and credit cards when she graduates.

Hmm. You are a brave man for taking that on.
My wife came out of university with a profit not a debt. And has proved to be just as efficient ever since.
Oh, she's an accountant which probably helps

I'm hoping she learns the same lessons I did by having to sacrifice vacations, new cars, shiny new computers for a while.
This would be unlike my parents, who were consistently bailed out and never learned their lesson.
