Sorry for the no updates, I been kinda busy
I moved last thursday and it took me a while to get internet again. I am in a different state now, though for reasons I can't specify I can't really tell you where I went
My new job is as a Technical Analyst for a communications company. I'm in training this week and the next 2 weeks, and I am pretty sure that at least I won't be suffering brain rot here. We get paid every 2 weeks instead of once a month like all my jobs for the last 7 years, so that'll be different.
The attack was put on hold to prepare for the move. Last time I moved I put about $3000 on my discover card in the first 2 months after I moved, so I put the attack on hold in order to "beef up" my emergency fund for the move. I also cashed out a mutual fund that my grandparents set up for me when I was born but I only recently gained control over it. I have moved somewhat successfully so now I can start thinking about getting back to attacking that debt.
Here's the current situation. As many of you know, I bought a truck in order to save myself from getting totally screwed by uhaul. Well, due to incompetence on Uhaul's part and (moreso) stupidity on my part, I made it all the way from Starkville to my destination....and the engine gave up.
I called the ONE friend I have here and we spent the next 15 hours trying to find a truck to borrow or rent so I could at least get the trailer unloaded. More on that in a minute.
As I was sitting in the truck having a nervous breakdown that night, I realized that I wasnt worried about how I was going to fix the truck, I was actually worried about how I was going to get my stuff from the leasing office to my apartment half a mile away. Isnt that crazy? I wasnt worried about the truck for 2 reasons--first, the saturn was still in good working order and even though it was several hundred miles away I knew I had someone that could bring it to me and second, I have the money to fix the truck
if I choose to do so.
The next morning, the apartment manager called me and asked me why my truck was still at the leasing office. I explained that we thought the engine had siezed and that I was doing everything in my power to get it moved. She called me back about 10 minutes later and said that several residents of the complex had offered to help me get my stuff moved in! I had stayed with my friend that night and when we got there 4 residents and 2 trucks were waiting for us. We got the trailer off my truck and onto one of thiers, and unloaded my truck into the other one. We got everything moved into my apartment in about 2 hours and returned my trailer by noon.
One of the guys crawled under my truck and gave me the best news I think I had ever heard: My engine hadn't siezed, just the starter had. He took a hammer and gave it a good thwacking and lo and behold she started right up
My freind in starkville drove here on saturday in my saturn (with no AC! now that's a freind!) and I flew her back on sunday.
So, I had the second worst week in my life, followed very quickly by freinds and complete strangers coming through for me in ways I never thought possible. The guy who "fixed" the truck even hooked me up with a free meal at a local restaraunt!
Here's the problem though: The starter in the truck had siezed because some seal or gasket in the engine has blown. The Saturn has no AC and since I am still in the "south" during summer that kinda sucks. I have about $3000 that I need to decide what to do with.
I could fix the truck, but without knowing exactly what's wrong I have to assume that I need a new engine AND tranny which will use up that money pretty quick. Or it could be $200. I don't know yet, but I am looking for a shop around here.
If I don't fix the truck, I need to get the Saturn fixed. The AC compressor I could replace myself, but its frickin $240 for them to recharge the system. I'd do that myself, too, but Saturn's AC coolant fitting is non standard so I basically have to have them do it.
The third option is to sell them both and get me a station wagon. Those who have seen my Saturn will understand why I need a bigger car (trunk space? what trunk space?). This is kind of a conundrum for a couple reasons. First, uhaul wouldnt let me take the trailer without a license plate, so I had to register the truck in mississippi 2 days before I moved. It takes those fockers 3 months to get you a new title, so I technically don't have a title for the truck right now AND I have to rely on the US Postal Service to forward me the title that they sent to my old address

Secondly, the DMV here is open M-F, 830-430 and closed 12-1 for lunch. Guess when I have to work? You can't get a tag or title without a state driver's license, and you can't get a license till you can present some utility bills in your name. I could
possibly get one next friday if training finishes early, but I prolly won't have a bill yet
I put BOTH cars in the local paper this week, but I haven't gotten any calls. I think that's because I still have a MS phone number and stupid people think I am trying to sell the car from 500 miles away. If I can sell both cars I can get a Saturn Station Wagon easily for what I sold the cars for. Then, no repairs to make and I still have the 3 grand to put on the student loan. The problem is that if I sell the Saturn first, I won't have a reliable vehicle.
I really have no idea what I'm going to do. I think I changed my mind 4 times while writing this. I am REALLY being challenged by this, because I have lots of cash in my checking account right now and the little kid inside me wants to go buy stuff---lots of stuff. There's a motorcycle in the newspaper that's calling my name. And the HP Ipaq 6315 keeps crossing my path (that's a $500 phone/PDA that I can almost rationalize). And I've always wanted a thousand dollar M14. There's also a 1974 pontiac ventura (think: Chevy Nova) for sale down the street that I would look great in--but I need something reliable....that's what I keep telling myself.
I've been listening Dave constantly to try to keep me from impulsing. This is really frickin hard. I haven't paid off my last credit card purely because I don't know what I'm going to do about the cars. The 3 grand mentioned earlier is over and above what I need to pay off that card.
Wow. That took 45 minutes to write. Hope it made sense.
