BYO LCD Projector

Well i just got a overhead projector off ebay which runs $5 bulbs that last for 200hours

I just took apart a 7.6" lcd (it's a OEM lcd so thats why it's a wierd size) and placed it on the overhead projector and i quickly blacked out the sides where the light was escaping and GOD DAMN it looks gooooooooood

It's crystal clear and it's pretty big

not bad for a LCD projector thats cost me $230 all up

I do have a few things to fix up and i'm gonna see if i can get a 10" LCD for use with it so it's a even bigger picture

Just wanted to rant about what i made :P

i'll put up some pics in a few days but i need to build a stand for the LCD and a fan to keep the LCD cool while above the overhead projector.

The quality is just so damn good i really am shocked i expected it to be a ok quality worth watching movies your already seen.

Sorry for the smiley overload

Yea, I want to give this a try myself, I just have too many unfinished projects going on. So, the LCD project will have to wait for now. I'm glad to know that yours works well though

Here is another view
I went to DIY Projector Company
and got this guys free plans - I used the MkIII plans - I removed
the top, I just cut above 3 inches above the LCD tray - to leave a
way to keep the LCD in place

Works great -

Didn't Toms Hardware guide have something on building projectors or is that what you guys are building from?

Yep Lumenlab is the best
to start with - it does cost $20 to get into but well worth it

My next projector may be a lumenlab style

You may want to upgrade to a HQI setup its about $100 but even with a 250w setup you can watch TV with the lights on and the $30 lamps last 20,000 hours -

I used one of them OHP LCD pannels - I am lazy - got it for $50 on ebay
just before the Toms Hardware craze drove prices up

I built one from an Apollo A1000 and nView Spectra C (total project cost of <$100) a couple years ago. The display was satisfying but the unit itself was way too big and noisy so I got rid of it.

Sorry i took so long was waiting till good friday to spend some time on it

I got it hooked up in the lounge room and the quality is ok but in my room it's fantastic and i noticed why

I've got digital tv in my room and it's crystal clear but on normal cable tv it just looks a tab blury compared to the digital tv.

I attached a few photo's i took some from a cartoon and some from a real tv show.

Now in the cartoon you see some lines etc on the picture that is cause the glass top broke when the unit arrived

So i used the glass top off my old table which is very dirty and thats why u got the lines

I also put my hand over the flash a bit so you can see the actual screen and some of the image projected.

It really is great but i reccomend you use something like digital tv or get a xga monitor/use a old laptop with a video in card etc.

Enjoy the pics
