My drive F, keeps coming up "unallocated"

I use my drive F as a backup drive. And use Iomega to back it up every morning 1 AM.
About every 3 months the drive becomes un-useable, and I have to re-format it/partition it...and start all over. No big deal, because Iomega does the backup automaticly.
I am just curious why it does this....what does "unallocated" mean?
In the picture it is Disk 1:

Any idea why this drive works fine for many months and then does this?
I guess it could be anything.

It might be your back-up software doing it.
