Research
Do most of you relise that the industry you are shopping in is one of the few where you can acctually see an invoice price, and so what if the dealer is making some money, obviously they need to feed a family to. Think about the last car stereo purchase you made if you bought it from a retail store then it had at least 100% markup over its cost to the store. If you think a car dealership is screwing you then think again. Yes some dealerships are out to screw people and yes they should be avoided. But there are plenty out there willing to get you in to a car at a price fair to you and the dealership. A salesperson only goes back and forth with you because they are a pawn being told what to do by there boss. Furthermore there is no dealership owned by a manufacturer, hence there all privetly owned and that owner must pay some pretty hefty operating costs not to mention that a typical dealership costs over 4 million. and if you are having trouble with a dealership not following its adds etc. there is laws against this. So if you want to get a good deal on a vehicle then why dont you spend the time to research what car you want how much your willing to spend on it and what to say to the dealer, go a step further and look up those laws that regulate a dealership, theres several hundred of them.
PS RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!

I got into a huge fight with a honda dealer, he was a douchebag.
Seems that all the dealerships in this town (Gainesville, FL) realize that there is only one dealer per manufacturer, unless you go an hour or so away, more if you want "big city" dealers. So they figure, you want a honda, you aint going anywhere else. There is just no competition to keep prices interesting.
Anyway I got into a fight about a price on a car, I had an "invoice" price on this Civic they had. And I gave him an offer of like $500 over that, and he still said "but we wont make a profit". And I said, yes you will you are making at least $500, AND I KNOW you get it for less than the invoice price I got anyway. So dont gimme that crap. And he continues to say he cant run a business selling cars that little over invoice and ****. So I say "Look pal, it aint my fault you seem to wish to have a dealership building on the most expensive plot of commercial land in town, or have gigantic glass showrooms and fancy ties and ****". He just sat there. SO I said "If I gave you $1 over your cost, its a profit. How you spend your profit is not my business, but im giving you at least $500 here and you still wont budge" he told me no, you cant afford this car. He said I wanted a car without air conditioning for that price, and I asked "Do you even have any cars without AC?" he said no. "I said thanks for ruining my idea of driving a Honda, *******" and I walked out.
**** WADE RAULERSON! YOU SUCK MY LEFT NUT.
im not bitter.
Down the road to Toyota, and bam i got what I wanted for a good price.
Though I said flatly "If I see one license plate holder, one sticker, one THING with "GatorLand Toyota" on it, im bringing the car back and asking for $5000 to do this "advertising" for you as I drive around town, dealer said there wouldnt be one.
Thing was, my car was a "dealer trade" cuz they didnt have a stick shift, from Michigan or something. So I know it didnt have the sticker on it when it arrived. So i pick up the car and BAM it has a sticker on it. So I told the dealer "you are a douchebag, just cuz most people dont realize you can remove the sticker with your fingers, I WILL NOT give you free advertising." And he said hed have it removed while i finished the paperwork. 2 hrs later, sticker still there and I just picked it off with my fingers, rolled it into a ball and stuck it into the huge pile of cash I brought for a down payment.
If you have a sticker or whatnot on your car advertising the dealership, WHY HAVENT U REMOVED IT?

See, that's why I do it over the phone with several dealers. We have a multiples of same make around, but I still called dealers 2-5 hours away just so I had more people to deal with. There was no heated discussion, no nothing. Very professional and quick. Simple "yes I'll play this game" or "no, thanks".
As for the advertising, I agree. I warned them before I picked it up, I wouldn't take the car with any sort of frame, logo, etc. It came with none.
Before I started doing things the way I described above, I bought a 4Runner, the "bad way", I walked in. 3 hours of haggling later, I think I still got a crap deal. I learned.
As for a dealer making a profit. Of course they get to make a profit. I was actually an easy sale for them. I talked to the Sales Manager on the phone for a total of about 10 minutes, he did the vehicle search while we were talking. Picking up the car took another 1/2 hour. 40 minutes for whatever profit they got from me. If they didn't like it they should have said no like the some other dealers.

And having lots of dealers is overated, here you gotta go about 15 minutes to get to the same manufactuer's next dealer. I still went ~3 hours to get mine.

you won't ever get a car for invoice pricing becuase of course the dealership has to stay in business! it can't pay the salesmen, light bills, etc. by not turning a profit.
the best way to buy is to way for the saturday ads in the newspaper where they are 8K off and get that one. the dealership makes no money on those models ( used to work for one). best time to come in is when the model year is being replaced, and at the end of the month.

I just now bought an Acura doing this "phone them all at the end of the month" method and once again it worked like a charm. There are far less Acura dealers around, but I still found about 10 (some as far as 3hrs away) that I emailed or sent a message to via their website. Of them, I heard from 5. Only 3 were serious about dealing. I bought a 2006 RSX for $300 over invoice. Is it the best deal possible? Who knows, it was the best I stirred up by contacting 12 dealers via email and talking to several for about a total of an hour all together. The deal may be better or worse next month. But, it's hard to call invoice + $300 bad.

I got my car from a dealer for more than $1000 less than what a private party probably could have gotten for it. I totaled it a year later and still got $600 more than I paid for it a year previous you just have to know someone who knows people.

kbyrd - I've heard of a similar method using FAXes. Probably doesn't get the same rates as cold calling, but it would work in a heavily saturated area....
OTOH - does anyone realize that new cars are the absolute worst way to spend money? Yes - a cool car makes your member larger, but is it really worth the steel toed boot to the shorts? Just wait 2 years and pick up an off-lease sucker. Then two years later, sell it (not to a dealer) and pick up another off-lease one. You'll end up spending less and still have a respectable ride!

you will never get a good deal on a new car... it loses its value when you drive it off the lot!!! Ridiculous (like my spelling!)

I agree... HOWEVER, there will never be a substitute for getting a brand new car, adding whatever you want to it, driving it mile per mile and see it hit the first 100mi, then 200mi, etc.... but it isnt the best from a money perspective by any means....

Wow, you people just haggle over cars? Hell I give the guy at radio shack hell because I only want 10 feet of speaker wire not 50 feet. Try and deal wherever you go, you'd be suprized what people will say.
If I were to buy any auto at this point, I'd get an SUV with employee discount, and ask them for some credit on gas, or some gas discount. They want to get rid of this gas hogs.
