Looking to Adopt a Town impacted by Hurricane Katrina

OK this maybe as OT as I have ever gotten but....

I just recieved this email from a co-worker. And I know there are more than a few members either impacted by Hurricane Katrina or close to it. Our small town is sometimes known as "Racecity USA" with over 60 Nascar Shops in a 10 mile area. We went thru Hugo many years ago and being so far inland we still got slammed.

Do you know of a smaller community (our size or smaller) that has been impacted by the storm? Anywhere from Florida to Louisiana that is not getting the publicity of the coastal cities and towns. Someplace we can make in impact with our limited resources and that our citizens can identify with. A town with a small race track or some tie to the racing community might be a good tie but it isn’t necessary.

So if anyone knows of a small town in the area could you please either email me alan@vwlife.net or simply reply

Thanks for your time

That would be Mooresville, NC, I believe. Do you actually work for one of the race teams? <curious>

Gulfport, MS
Pascagoula, MS
Bay St Louis, MS
Mandeville, LA (north across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans)
Slidell, LA (west across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans)

That's a short list. I just went to Google Maps and zoomed in on the gulf coast and started naming towns. I don't know how hard any of these locations have been hit, but they were all in the path of Katrina.
Along the Mississippi shore, pretty much anything has been wiped out. Katrina moved casinos into the middle of the interstate.
I applaud and support your efforts.

I am from pascagoula MS.
The Gulf Coast of MS is gone it is unbelievable no words can describe the destruction. Just about 95% of Pascagoula was flooded I am one of four houses in my neighborhood that did not get any water. Thanks for helping, alot of people have lost everything.

Take care

I have been concerned about that - N.O. is getting almost all the press, but there are a large number of people and communities that have become almost invisible in the news. I hope the attention N.O. is getting doesn't result in everyone else being ignored.

Thank you BOB. Everything at least a mile from the beach is GONE leveled even here in pascagoula. It is insane the whole town was under water.

Take care.

New Orleans is simply the largest city that was laid to waste.
Every town along the gulf coast was either destroyed or sufffered heavy damage.
In Gulfport, entire buildings were moved off their foundations. We're talking large resort hotels and casinos. One offshore casino was ripped from it's moorings and was sitting across I-10 afterward.

Thanks for all the information, As the email stated, while we understand the massive damage mostly from the news, we are still looking for a small community that isnt getting the coverage to help out in any way we can.

I would like to think if we could get the race teams involved in this venture maybe just maybe we can make atleast a small difference. Heck a local radio station (Charlotte NC) has raised over $450,000 and sent 25 transfer trucks full to the area.

Hopefully we will have something more structured by tomorrow evening.
