How do you like my Home Made Generator

I have a new Briggs 6.5hp Intek motor and a 100amp
CS130 alternator - upgraded with a iceberg kit and
I have a 600watt inverter - Will upgrade that soon -
and the 600watt is not even installed yet

here is the front view - I use a old metal box for a control panel
and a old Direc TV dish arm to mount that box, I have a Volt
meter installed, and a rheostat to vary the power output from
alternator, and a switch to turn the alternators field off and on
Also mounted on the side of that box is 3 12v ash tray sockets

I will later install a amp meter and hour meter

here is a rear view -

Why did I spend money on this and not a real Generator
- Well I have a real Generator a Coleman 5000watt one-
- but it puts out 130v and you have to load it down with
all kinds of junk to get it down to 120v - like coffee pots
and hair dryers, just a waste of gas and power

Using a inverter my home made unit is computer
and electronics safe and only puts out 120v
and never over, plus its lighter and because it
built onto a garden cart its easer to move around

I will use the home made one for small power outages
and stuff like camping, charging batterys, and the big
one for long power outages - a few years back we were
with out power for 3 months - and it seams like every
few weeks the power will go out for a few hours or a day

I guess missing TV shows and sitting in the dark will do that to you -
you start thinking all kinds of ways to get your TV / Computer to work

Thats one reason I put a computer in my car, power outages

the motor was $150, the alternator was $45 - junk yard, rebuild kit for it was
$30, the pulleys were $5 each, the battery was $60 but its a well used
battery that I had, And a $50 garden cart from Lowes, and $10
for the 12v sockets

and the rest is just what I had laying around, the new inverter will
cost about $100 - the old one cost me $50

I would say you could make one like mine for about $400 or less
but if you have a chevy alternator and battery that takes $100
off of that ,

Sad thing is the 5000watt Generator only cost $600
but I had fun and it works - and works better than most
high $$$ battery chargers - and I needed one any way

I can think of a good reason to not but the parts for this:
http://generatordepot.us/

If you are a redneck and/or have the parts 'laying' around (neighbors shed?) than ignore my statement.

Curiosity will become famous soon enough
That's awesome. I would think a 12VDC generator with a storage battery like that might be hard to find, if they make anything like that?

nice job

I'm planning to do the same thing but DC only for powering my system at car shows

I thought you might want to know that an alternator wont make any more power after 2500 rpm so if you keep the engine at 2500 rpm you will still get max power and save a lot of gas

my setup is going to have an electric start 2 stroke pocket bike motor

I am looking for a controller that will sense when the voltage drops below 10.5v and will send a + or - pulse to a remote start unit so the generator will start by itself when it is needed

does anyone know where I can find such a device?

Well I do work on cars alot also - and a good heavy duty Battery
Charger could cost up to a $150 - I use a 100amp alternator -
so I got a 100amp battery charger - and thats why I put the
rheostat to vary the power - I can charge up a almost dead battery
in like 10-15 min with this,
