what is a good place to place my online photos or how do i compress?

Gents know of a free application that will let me compress my jpgs from my digital camera? I want to toss some photos of my install up but i only have 10 megs of space available in my webspace. Each photo is about a meg, so thats a no go.

Or is there a free service that will host my photos? all million bytes?

There's a great freeware utility called irfanview that will batch convert images. As far as hosting, there are tons of free places to host pictures, but most of them delete the images if they haven't been viewed for a little while. Best bet would be to drop the images down to a few hundred KB at most and 10MB should be plenty at that point.

Being very old-skool, I use the netpbm tools or imagemagick from the command line. ;-) Microsoft has a powertoy for image resizing (see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx) but I've never played with it. I've been very happy with some of the other XP Powertoys, though.

Another option is the GIMP, an open-source tool like Photoshop, which will give you full cropping, editing, filtering, etc. capabilities as well.

While it's not really compression, resizing your pictures will save tons of space. I have a digital camera that I run in 12MP mode and it creates images that are approximately 4Megs in size. Because I am in Iraq with less than the best internet service available, emailing pictures of that size is just not gonna work. I perfer to use the Microsoft PowerToy Image Reszier to resize my pictures quickly and easily. Once installed, it is integrated in the Windows shell so all you have to do is right-click on a picture (or pictures) and select resize image. A dialog is shown giving you the option to make the image small (640x480), medium 800x600, large (1024x768), or a custom size that you define. Image Resizer will create copies of the image in the size that you desire leaving your originals intact or you can choose to overwrite the originals thus saving space.

Just my two cents.

Derek
