Thumbs down napster to ditch .mp3

I read on slashdot.org (again) that napster is going to **** off .mp3 files in place of a new .nap format (I guess they hope it will be secure!)

full story - http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/20428.html

and another - http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/2001...napster_9.html

not that anyone uses napster anyway now... but just thought i would bring it to your attention....

anyway, somehow "napcar" doesn't have the same ring to it as "mp3car" now does it?

there were 3 seperate reports in the business section of the local paper about www.musiccity.com being as popular (ie, having the same number of simultaneous users) as napster was during the period just before it was shut down.

Cool

That screenshot of the new version is quite impressive, but I think that Napster is quite past it's prime. Adding a new audio format looks like a last ditch effort to me. Of course, I could be wrong...

I don't think you are wrong..... I dont like the idea of an audio format so closley interlinked with a "digital music" provider.

If napster goes bust/dis-bands (and I reckon they might) the songs users may have downloaded sitting in this new .nap format will become useless, since development of players certainaly wouldn't continue.
