Cold air intake.... n00b questions.

Hey!

Well, I'm definately more of a computer man than I am a car man, but I'm getting more interested in car stuff. I purchased my 04 Lancer Ralliart new, and it's gotten me sorta hooked on upgrading. However, there is a nice warranty on the car (10year, 10K miles), so I can't do anything too crazy cause it'll void the warranty.

I was thinking that a good place to start is a cold air intake. It seems to be a universally accepted first-step for engine upgrades. I talked with Mitsubishi, and they said that it wouldn't void the warranty AS LONG AS... if it breaks, the air intake is not a factor.

So, I was wondering if could cause any problems? I've heard it's pretty much plug-and-play, especially if I buy a kit. I don't know much about engines, but I figure you guys do. Any thoughts? Thanks!

-Ben

1) cold-air intakes are pretty simple to install. Basically a bolt-on operation.
2) Get a quality product. K&N makes the best cold-air intakes, as a general rule. There are other products out there that are cheaply made and lesser quality. Some work better than others. Do your homework first.
3) Don't you think this would be better suited for a performance-oriented forum, rather than a motley bunch of geeks?

First get a cold air intake. If your not annoyed by the sound of it after a couple months then get some cat back exhaust.

I use a K&N, then sold it for about 150, and made my own for under 50 bucks.

whoops, meant 100k.

Yeah, this probably would be best for a performance forum... I was just bored at work and wanted to see what you guys thought.

on my blazer i threw the k&n stage two blah blah blah high performance, sounds nice... cost about 150, and a day to put it on. on my engine i feel the difference about when i hit 2500-3000 rpms, (right when my vortec use to hit).. cAI isnt much, just basically that first step like you said.

cold air intake is just getting the air from somewhere other than the damn hot engine bay. but you have to be careful you dont let water and other crap get in there. Oh and hot exhausts from other cars if you are sitting in traffic jams - ie no big intakes sticking a foot out the bottom of your bumper

Here's an idea, route an output from your airconditioning straight to the engine air intake
