Looking for a Cable Modem/Router

I'm moving to a new house and I'm going to get High speed Cable Internet. Before I move in I'll be wiring the house with at least 2 Cat5 connections in each room.

Does anybody know of an all in one Cable Modem/Router or do I need to buy 2 pieces of equipment?

Also Do you have any favorites for modems or routers? I like the Linksys routers with the built-in printer port but the oruter is going in a closet downstairs so it might not get used....

I believe there are routers out there with built in cable modems. I have the Linksys router which you just plug the cable modem provided by my ISP into the router and thats it. (Two things, router and modem.) I also suggest having them seperate because like me, I had a power surge come down the cable line, fry my cable modem but it didn't touch the router. If the router and cable would have been one unit them I would have been screwed. Hope this helps!

yeah I guess I might as well get 2 diferent devices. I was just hoping to get some kind of universal router. Something that plugs into Cable or Ethernet with built-in router.

I'll keep looking...

Another reason for having them seperate is you usually get the cable/dsl modem from your provider, while you have to get the router yourself. It is also worth noting that _some_ ISPs prohibit using more than one computer behind the connection.

I'm pretty happy with my Terayon TJ110, over 8000 kbps down/ 900 up, but it depends a lot on your provider. Be sure to get a model supported by your provider, for firmware flashes and such. You may have found this already but the forums at DSLReports are a great resource.

I would go with cat 5e, cat6 cat7 or even cat8 if you can find it...it is much higher quality cable...also throw in 2 fiber lines and 2 coax lines...you know you'll want those down the road.

The only modem/router i have seen and am currently using is a ZyXel Prestige, cant remember the model number. I work for a cable modem provider and we got a few of these in and i got to take one and try it out. So far it works great BUT i have no idea about the price.
Most providers will rent you a cable modem for around $9 a month, this is usally the best way to go because if something happens to it they will come out and replace it. I also like the Linksys 4Port router, very popular and I have seen these for as low as $80 after mail in rebates.

The Linksys units kick ***. If I were you, I would spend the extra money and get the Linksys router/hub/printserver with built in 802.11b. About $100 more than the standard router, but well worth it.

As far as the modem goes, just use whatever the cable company supplies. That way, it is their responsibility if something goes wrong.

If you decide to go with seperate units, and can hang on a bit (early 2002), Linksys will also be incorporating QoS into the above-mentioned unit.

That woould be way cool but I think it would cost me an arm and a leg to run Fiber optics in the house!

I've decided that separate devices is better. Plus I wasn't able to find an all in on unit.

Aaron and DOSforWho?, I'm going to take your advice and get the Linksys 4Port router with built-in 802.11b. I was just going to add wireless on later but that sonds like a better plan.

I tell ya guys I'm excited! In about an hour I'm going to go over to the house with a Contractor/Friend to decide where we want to put everything!

I was thinking it would be better to buy the Cable Modem because the Internet access would be $10 cheaper and it would pay for itself in about a year. Am I still wrong on this one??

Just got a NetGear RT314 from Future Shop Online, $79 CDN (refurb) plugged every thing in and it worked right off the bat (Rogers cable internet) . Didn't even have to configure anything.

i own the lynksys router mentioned above ( 713-p)and have loved every bit of it except the print server. for some reason i can only get one machine on my system to recognise it at a time so i just set up one system as my print server. otherwise i love it. i have machines all over the house and the wireless easily reaches from the second floor closet (router) to my workshop in the basement. have fun man

I also have to recommend the Belkin wireless router/hub. I've had one running at my house since before Christmas and it's performed perfectly. I have connectivity via wireless until I get to a small park on my street (about 700 feet from my house), and it works great in my garage. The router was fairly easy to configure, but I wouldn't expect a newbie to be able to do it. It's quite a bit more powerful than the Linksys unit. But no built in printserver.

If you're feeling adventurous, check out ClarkConnect. It's a Linux distribution that turns an old 486 or Penitum into a router/print server/web server/whatever else you want. I was going to buy a router a year ago, but found this and decided to give it a try. I love it! This was my first exposure to Linux, and it was very easy to install (up and running within 15 mins). Once setup, you can control it from the web browser of any PC on the LAN.
All that is required is a 486 or higher, 32 MB RAM, 2 NICs and a 500MB hard drive. No monitor is required after the installation.
