How do I Sync all my mp3s?

Ok my question is not directly for a computer in a car but I do think it could relate and be of use to some members. What I want is to sync my home and office PCs (could be home and car). I need to do this over a flash disk, 512mb, no internet. My problem is that my mp3 directories home and work are over 10 gigs in size with many different songs. Now I don't mind making several trips, and I will have to as anyone can see. But are there any programs out there that can do this? Can I sync these 2 large directories without having to manually find every song? Is there any software that will automatically pick some of the files I need today and then some other files the next day until it's all synced? Please help.

Let me get this straight:

This is scaled down... but basically...

You have files A,B,C, and D on computer 1
You have files C,D,E, and F on computer 2.

You want files A,B,C,D,E and F on computer 1 and computer 2.

Right? (basiclaly you have some files that are ONLY one computer 1, some files that are ONLY on compupter 2, and maybe some files that are on Both... but you want ALL of the files on BOTh computers? That's what Sync means to me...)

You could probably write some good old fassion MS-DOS batch files to automate stuff like that...Or maybe someone else has a better idea. I don't know of any software at the moment that will do that for you.

I've never used it but this can be used with flash disks.

microsoft has a cool thing called "SyncToy" .. it's in thier download sections.

NitroNic that's exactly what I'm looking for. And thats what I thought too, gonna have to write my own program. Maybe I should start learning how to do that.

How are your MP3s arranged? Are they all in one big directory, or are they in several subdirs?

My mp3s are mostly arranged in subdirectories. Example C:\*\*\Musik\artist\album\*.mp3 But all the subdirs are in one directory. That is C:\*\*\Musik

I would try what neon_eddy suggested, that SyncToy program. It's basically meant to sync two different locations (folders, directories, etc....) and it works pretty good. You can set it up to sync in several different kind of "modes", where it just keeps both sides synced, or just does a one-way sync, etc....

Now, to get music onto the flash card I've actually been using the Sync function built into Windows Media Player 10. I've got a 1gig flash card for my pocket pc that I use for mp3's and all I do is add the songs I want into a special "Sync" playlist in Media Player and when I plug my flash card into a reader it will automatically add the songs I want and erase those I took off. I know it's still microsoft but it does everything I need with a ~20 gig song database.

http://www.2brightsparks.com/ has a program called SyncBack. This freeware program is the best sync program I have ever seen. It can sync over ftp, local, network, etc. The shareware version (SyncBackSE) provides even more functionality, especially in the area of FTP.

This is a great program even for those not trying to sync mp3's... it has a lot of uses.

No but I can make it the same on my home PC. Have enough room there to copy my music to a new directory for the sync.

I did find one program that might work for what I need, SmartSync Pro. Has a feature to sync 2 PC that are not on a LAN over disk. Just what I'm looking for but it needs to copy all files into a compressed file first. Dont have the room on my office PC for that. I have 15Gigs of music at work and only 6gigs of disk left. Hope theres more opptions out there.

If you make the new directory... instead of copying the files to the new directory... just move them (This is assuming that they are on the same logical drive). It'll go A LOT faster (if you do it this way it doesn't actually rewrite the files, it just changes their location in the directory structure. And I might have used some incorrect jargon there... but... trust me it'll go faster).

Here ya go. There are 3 files in this zip. Put them all on your flash drive.
Edit the first 2 lines of List_A.bat and List_B.bat to match the drive letter and root directory you want to sync on Computers "A" and "B", respectively. These two lines look like this:

set rootdrive=c:
set rootdir=\downloads

This means that your MP3s are in the c:\downloads directory and subdirectories. Be sure to format the lines EXACTLY like these. No trailing \'s or anything like that.

All of these scripts are to be run from the flash drive, or external hard drive.

First, run List_A.bat on Computer "A".

Plug into Computer "B" and run List_B.bat. Then run sync_files.vbs.

--->Now move the files off of your drive onto Computer "A". Run List_A.bat and then run sync_files.vbs.

--->Now move the files off of your drive onto Computer "B". Run List_B.bat and then run sync_files.vbs.

Continue repeating the steps with arrows in front of them until the only popup message you get on both computers is "Done".

If you have any trouble, give me a shout, and I'll see what I can do. I wrote this between major problems at work. So i didn't have time to make the code pretty. For all you code monkey snobs out there, I understand, but it's free.
