Angry LPT Port & Linux

Does anyone know how to write to the data lines on an LPT port in Linux properly. Don't say outb or outportb as these are DOS comands. Althought it is possible to bodge it so you can use them in Linux, I want to do it properly.

Total re-design underway: on the whole progress is very slow as the car is taking up too much time :)
