Dell / Hard Drive Help Needed

So I friend gave me his girls Dell Dimension 8400 to fix. It starts to boot to XP (Home) then gave a blue screen (Unmountable_Boot_Volume). She said it happened after she tried to install her new digital camara, that was the last thing she did.

I have tried the following, I want to try anything to save the data. Drive is a Maxtor 6y160m0 - SATA
  • XP CD, recovery console. "chkdsk /r"; can not find autochk.exe, even when I copied it to a floppy and specified that path. fixboot and fixmrb; did something, but windows still refuses to boot. I no longer get "Unmountable_boot_volume", but the run "chkdsk /f" message.
  • XP CD, recovery console. "dir"; Reported some error about directory structure.
  • Knoppix CD (ver 3 something) did not detect the hard drive. Downloading Knoppix DVD ver 4.
  • XP CD, repair install. Windows said the partition was unreadable and needed formatting. Canceled.
  • Partition Magic 8; Critical Error 45, CRC error in data.
  • Dell's Utility (F12); Hard drive diagnostics failed with a code 7.
  • Dell's Utility (F12); Error code 0F00:0244 - Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected. Happens a lot (as in I get tried of clicking yes to continue testing.)
  • Maxtor MaxBlast 4 CD - Did not have any diagnostics.

Now I am pretty sure the hard drive is dying, if not already dead. But I would like to try and save any data that might be on the drive. I can not move the drive to my computer because I have no SATA.

Suggestions?

I just grabbed a 80GB drive (nothing too important on it) and started installing XP on it. Hopefully I can grab some data off the SATA drive. I wanted to avoid the wait of installing XP on any drive.
