difference b/w moon roof and sun roof

Is there a difference between a moon roof and a sun roof? I've heard both terms. Additionally, does anyone know how much it costs to get one (or either if they're different things) installed?

A moon roof is tinted glass. A sun roof is sheetmetal.

From the outside, it looks like the regular roof (with the possible exception of weatherstripping), sure.

The point of having a metal sunroof is that it opens up to see sky above you. You can't do that with a regular roof, unless you carry a sawzall at the ready when you're driving....

When you look up at a moon roof you'll see a pair of butt cheeks imprinted on the glass.

mines got the power tinted glass/sliding cover inside. Dealer said it was a moonroof, but everyone looks at me funny when i say moonroof, so I jus call it a sunroof...

I was taught the other way around. A sunroof is glass, sometimes removable, and can slide back manual or electric. Some pop up, and don't slide, but can be removed.
A moon roof is just a cutout in the roof that slides back, either electrically or manually, but cannot be removed from the vehicle.

This could be a debate, as people view them or call them differently.

As for cost, that all depends. Type of car, factory vs. aftermarket installation, yada yada. Most of the time, if it is offered as an option by a new car dealer, they job them out to instal shops and soak you for a huge markup.
Way back when I used to work for a Honda/VW/Mitsubishi/Volvo/Mercedes dealer. The sunroofs were jobbed to a local shop, except for the MB's. They came factory with moon roofs. No glass, just metal. This was back in 87-88 and a Benz was a whole different car back then.

a sun roof is for showing off you man hood

but yea Sunroof = metal pannel, moon roof = glass window
- but most are both now - Sun roof & moon roof

Sunroof is the generic term used to describe an operable panel in a vehicle roof which can let in light and/or air. Moonroof is a term created by Ford in the 70's, yet is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs.

I always knew a sunroof as a glass panel, allowing the sun in.... didn't matter if it was the factory type slide back into the roof type, or the pop up aftermarket type.... that's a sunroof

moonroof is the oposite of sunroof, a metal panel instead of a glass panel..... I remember cadillac claiming there roof to be a sunroof moonroof combo because there was a retractable shade that could be fixed in place to always cover the glass while the roof opened & closed.. making it also act as a moonroof by not exposing the glass....

bmw's have them both ways, to me the glass panel is the sunroof & the metal panel is the moonroof?
