Wireless with no desktop

Hey guys, my brother in law has one computer: a sony vaio notebook with intergrated wireless. He just got internet (cable) and the installer told him there would be no way for him to use the wireless feature because he doesn't have a "land based" based computer. Is there a way we can get around it without buying another computer?

They even make cable modems with built in wifi routers. They usually can only host about 4 computers, but that should be enough. Beat that installer over the head with a printed out copy of this thread... multiple times!

If you already have a router, a wireless access point.

Oh its not unique incident. I was on vaction and i needed to set up environment for my mobile equibment and i met computer store owner, who was trying to tell me same ****. When i finally managed to get him understand what equibment i need him to order, he was saying that im on my own with installation... like i would be doing second Msc in networking (first one is from computer science) just so that i would need a help from a guy who tried to sell me RJ-11 cable as RJ-45 to install something so trivial which my grandma could plug-in if she was still alive.

Sorry about rant... but sometimes imcompetence gets so damn anoying.

Actually they can host many more... like +/- 250...

Peace,

Rafster

P.S. Kick the installer in the nugs for being a dumb ***....

No no, I know that the linksys and actual routers can host many many more! I was talking about the built in ones. The ones that are included in cheapo cable modems for this application. Not true routers, more like cheap hotspots.

I believe they can host more, just that the cable/phone companies locked the firmware to 4.

I would get a router with built-in wireless, like Linksys WRT54GL.
