Why hotmail has started to **** me off
I have 3 hotmail accounts. The first two I got many years ago--before MicroSuck bought hotmail--and the third I got about 2 years ago.
ok, it used to be "HotMail--the world's free web-based e-mail!" which is why I have 3 hotmail accounts, with 2mb of storage space each (at least when I signed up). Now they are doing this "MSN Extra Storage" crap. It is really starting to **** me off. The reason it makes me so mad, is because the little "storage meter" has got to be using some random variable, because on one account I had 3 messages totaling 9k and the meter said I was using 63% of my storage space. So I deleted 2 messages totaling 6 k (leaving a single 3k message) and now I have 62% free. WTF? 1/3 of the data and only a 1% reduction? how does that work?
So I switch to another account. It was my first one, so the address has been sold to about 7543234636674325435 spammers. I had 32 messages totaling 93k, but I was only using 5% of my storage space. that's a neat trick, considering the previous account.
So I delete ALL the mail (and empty the folders), log out, wait about 20 minutes and then log back in. Guess what? nothing in any folder, including trash can, but I am now using 10% of my "storage space"
GRRRRRR
as a side note, my mother called me last week and asked me why I was paying for an email account. Apparently, she had tried to sign up for a hotmail account and clicked on 10mb storage account when she got the the "activate you account" screen. Why? because you have to look really hard to find the free account.

Its sort of hard to feel bad here. It's a free email service, so is it really that bad of MS to try and make money by giving an upgrade option? They are a business after all.
As for the storage counter.. Its probably just a dumb error in the code, and doesn't really effect the space left or not. When its empty, does it say 0kb and 10%? If so, I'd screen shot it and send it to hotmail help and let them know about it.. They may have an answer.
Sometimes you get what you pay for too, which in this case is nothing. Sometimes I wish that there were no free email accounts out there like this.. It would have certainly cut down on the amount of spam I have to sort through every day.

I hate anything Micro$oft, and Hotmail is just another example of them corrupting a perfectly good thing. I never used Hotmail because they don't allow POP3 access, but I did sign up in order to have an MSN screen name because several of my out-of-state friends ise MSN Messenger. Anyway, I'd use the email account just for recieving pictures or other files from other Hotmail users. Even though I've never given the address out, I still manage to get emails with porn or virus attachments, which I open just for fun. Since I'm running Linux, it's fun to open virus-laden emails and watch exactly... nothing happen.
At any rate, I've been using Saintmail ( www.saintmail.net) for a few months now and it's great. I've never seen a faster POP3 server and I've never gotten any unsolicited anything. Granted, you have to pay a dollar a month, but it's worth it to me.

Just to add my 2 cents, i've had my hotmail account since it first came about, and has been the one consistent address ive given people over the years (as ive changed isps many times). it is free, so i cant really complain. back before it was purchased by microsoft, there was a 3rd party app that you could buy (for like $10?) that would give you pop3 access to hotmail (which is what i did) and now that M$ owns hotmail, you can actually access it from Outlook Express, so its like fake pop3 (more like a gimped imap really, but thats neither here nor there).
