credit card question
I'm 16, and I want a card so I can order stuff of the internet. My mom won't let me use hers (cause she's to stupid to get it paid off). So, I called my bank, and they said I had to be 18. Yet I know several of my friends have them. WTF!
So does anyone know what I can do? Is there a thing where I can get like a subset of my moms card, or something?
Thanks..

The easiest thing to do is to get a secured credit card. It is a card that functions exactly like a regular credit card, except that your bank will require you to have XXX amount of dollars in an account that you cannot touch. This account is used in case you stop paying off your card. Think of it as a credit card with training wheels. After a year or so of good credit most places will up your credit line and make the card a normal credit card.

Similarly, you could get a debit card from your bank, rather than a credit card (most offer both). Most banks give the debit card free to their account holders. You know the whole Visa campaign about how horrible check-writing is and how the debit card works the same...

You have to be 18 to get your own credit card. If your mom is willing to co-sign a card for you, then they will give you one.

I imagine a lot of your friends may have cards on their parent's account. Thats what I had a long time ago for emergencies (heh yea right). It was just another card on their account that had my name (and signing authority). Its still their bill that gets the charges.
The visa-checking card deal is probably your best bet.

The whole credit card thing is ridiculous. No matter what I do, I cannot get a card in my name...I'm 22, with a full time job, 3 cars and a significant bank account. No one will give me a damn card! Arg! Sure, the bank will give me one if I put up $1500, but that's stupid for a card that I might use once or twice a month (mainly for eBay)...

Aaron, you're probably just trying to jump to a decent card right away. If you start on one of those college student cards (I had the verizon visa) they give them away like candy. Use that for 6 months to a year and you can get better cards easily.

Heh, the scary truth is that even bad credit is better than no credit.

Wow, that's strange. The second I turned 18 I got 2 credit cards. I had no credit, and my parents have bad credit. Go figure???

I would go for a student card, but I am not a student anywhere. All the application forms ask for a school...
I think I am going to go down to the bank next week with a list of my material assets. Perhaps that will sway the bank people in my favour...

I applied to every CC I could on the internet. Everybody turned me down... Then about 4 months later I was getting CC offers from everybody! My advice is to apply online to as many as you can!

My dad keeps ragging on me because I had a Platinum Mastercard with Citibank when I was 18, and I didn't even have a full time job, whereas when he had just gotten married, he couldn't get any credit cards even though he had a full time job, a master's degree, he owned his house and car, etc...
I'm not sure why Citibank gave me a platinum card at age 18 but I've been using it for years and have made every payment in full on time with no exception. Now I get 3-4 credit card offers a week.
