Building new computer- help deciding base!

Well my not so trusty Gateway 933M is finally starting to show its age. I use it as my file server, so its not that big of a deal. It maxed out at a crappy 512MB of ram anyways. Oh, and it IS a gateway...

So time for an upgrade. I have two choices, one i like a lot, and one that is cheap and iwll do the job. There they are

1)I have a Socket A board that needs a processor and HSF. Some crappy company, no agp, with some hard to get drivers and stuff, but the basics i already have. All i need is processor and RAM and i'm golden with it. I'm looking at maybe $50 total getting it up and running with something respectable.

2)Lying around i have a AIW 9600Pro. in my shuttle i have an AIW9600XT. I can sell my motherboard, buy another one with an AGP slot, and get an Opteron processor that is 64 bit and maybe dual core. I have 1GB of ECC RAM. This will be my new gaming machine and fileserver. Cost is starting at $100. I can then turn the Shuttle into an HTPC and stream television around the house.

$100 doesnt' sound like alot, but it is for me right this second. I have a few projects to finish up in the mean time. Anyways, does anyone have any experience with opteron processors? Arethey decent gaming chips, as i know they are good server chips.

ok, took the first step abd bought the mobo. Now for the processor. I'm thinking about the Opteron 148. I can later upgrade to dual core as the mobo supports that, but for now 64bit is enough. And yeah, amd sucked in the dual core benches. 1Gb ECC ram thanks to a forum member. good stuff

YAY!!! i won the ebay bid for the Opteron 148 with all i need to set it up. Total cost will be determined in a bit. It shoudl total out to aroudn $100. I guess this means two forum members are very happy because they get things from me for a good price.

okay, processor is comming in on the 15th, so far thei si the set up
Opteron 148 2.2ghz processor
1GB ECC registered ram @ PC2100 (266mhz)
80gb SATA drive
250GB PATA drive
2x80gb drives in raid maybe? PATA
DVD+-rw DL
DVD rom
ATI AIW9600 XT

connected will be a super g router system. I will be using my shuttle as an HTPC for streaming mt tv around the house. Also this will be my streaming system for my car and this new computer be my file server. what else should i get....

So, the computer dind't work wiht the ECC ram, but i worked with the regular stuff. blah. Added a 512 stick and called it a day.

so then i turned it on.

I'm afraid of my computer. Its fast. too fast. faster than i expected. Just too. Bloody. Fast.

Half the ram, 200mhz faster clock cycle than my last processor, which was a P4. it blows it away in ways that some would consider unnatural...

I'm gonna be afraid of dual core. Or quad core...or fusion. well...maybe fusion...
