pictures as attachments

Hello. What determines wether a picture appears within the thread or as an attacment you have to click on to view? Also, many threads that i look at have a box with an "x" in the center where a picture is supposed to be..why is that??

If you host a picture on your own server and then insert it using the [IMG] tags, then it can appear anywhere in your post. If you attach it to the post (thus having them host the picture for you) it shows up as an attachment. A red 'x' means the picture link is broken. Either the picture no longer exists on the server, or the server is down, etc.
