I get the following message on my CarPC (running Vista) if I turn off the PC while resuming from Hibernate (like moving my car from the driveway to curb):



Windows XP seemed to always use the first option. It never prompts you with a menu. Is there anyway to turn this menu off? Or suppress the message by specifying a default value?

The easiest way to circumvent this and other problems with poweron, power off is to just put a simple three pole switch on the white accessory lead that wakes your PC up.

You have three wires running to the PC, ex. red (constant power), black (ground) and white (accessory) power (only on when ignition on).

Run the white wire from your accessory power to the top leg of the switch.
Run a red wire from the constant 12V power to the bottom leg of the switch.
Run a white wire from the middle leg of the switch to the white wire going into your PC.

With the switch in the top position, PC works as it does now, starts and shuts down when power on accessory is seen.

With the switch in the middle position, PC doesnt start. This is where you put it to just start the car and move it.

With the switch in the bottom position, the PC will stay on and running even if you shut the engine. Good for quick stops when you dont want to go through a whole shutdown/wake up from hibernation.

The switch also acts as a reset switch for when the PC hangs or something doesnt initialize right, switch to middle position will cut power to the white line and the psu will do a shutdown, flip it back to top position and it will wake up.

Ok I finally figured out the problem which prevented the computer from staying in standby (forcing me to use hibernate). I knew that the problem was caused by my touch screen controller (Xenarc 700TSV). I tried to disable the USB Root Hubs from bringing the computer out of standby within Device Manager. This had no effect on the problem.

Today, I came across the solution; a command line executable which gives you fine control over your power settings (Vista only). Below are the commands I ran to fix the issue:

1. powercfg -DEVICEQUERY wake_armed

The command above will list all the devices on your computer which will bring it out of standby. In my case the following device was the only one listed:

"USB Touchscreen Controller(Universal)"

I then ran the next command to actually prevent the device from waking the computer:

2. powercfg -DEVICEDISABLEWAKE "USB Touchscreen Controller(Universal)"

The end result is that my computer now stays in sleep mode and I am able to hibernate it after a certain period of time to save my battery (I have it set to 60 minutes currently). I am hoping this works around the issue and helps anyone else out there.
