Hibernate automatically from standby?

I've been looking around a bit and can't find any direct answer to this. In the Power control panel of XP I can select how many minutes to wait before the system goes into standby, and again how long to wait before the system goes into hibernation. I was thinking this might be a good way to cut down on resume times without draining the battery too much, but I'm not sure if it works the way I think it does.

If I put the computer in standby manually, will it automatically hibernate after the preset amount of time? In other words, say I set it to hibernate after two hours. I shut off the car, put it in standby, and leave. I come back an hour later and it boots up from standby, very quickly. I drive somewhere else and put it in standby again, but this time I don't come back for three hours. At the two hour mark, it goes into hibernate mode and cuts power to the computer completely, and when I get back to the car it still resumes where it was but takes a little longer, and doesn't drain the battery along the way.

Is this actually how it works?

I think it's one or the other, so no. However, I've never tried this, so I will. I'm testing with my laptop now, I'll let you know.

I manually put my laptop into standby, and 2 minutes after it went into hibernate. So yes, your thought process is correct.

Thanks for checking. My desktop doesn't support everything I need or I could have tested it myself.

This works like this on my laptop as well, inspiron 5150. I just tested it last week because I was wondering the same thing.

Wow, that's a great idea - didn't think of that. Would be great to use for ~30-60 minutes for hibernate if you are running errands and stopping and going often.

kickass.. should work well for my new laptop based system.

pause winamp on ignition key going off.
suspend when battery reaches 75%
hybernate at 10%

Well, I tried it yesterday - set it to Standby when power button is pushed (M1 powers off when car powers off) and Hibernate after 30 minutes (good amount of time for stopping for short errands), but it never Hibernated. Should I have made the settings differently? Maybe set it to Standby after 1 second (or whatever the minimum is) and Hibernate to 30 minutes?

I *think* you can't have an app in the foreground that prevents the pc from going into standby (most front ends are like this). If you did, this may be why it's preventing the hibernate.

Try setting your front end to do nothing (on power button press) and set the OS to standby when power button pressed. Then, set it to hibernate after some amount of time. I'm in the process of trying it this way (because letting the front end control what happens seems to be the reason it won't hibernate after the "set amount of time"). I'll report back after while. We'll see if it went into hibernate.

Ok, it didn't really work. I'm wondering if there is a BIOS component to this...

Has anyone actually gotten this to work in practice?

There is a program available called WOSB.exe or wake on standby that will do this. I have used it in the past and it seems to work quite well. If you search you can figure out how to create a batch file so that after x minutes after entering standby the pc will start up and go into hibernate. Not sure if you want to have to run a seperate program or not but thought i'd throw this out there.
