true cross-platform music front end!

Hello everybody! i just wanted to let everybody know that i am currently in development of a cross platform front end written in flex 3 and published with adobe AIR to allow the app to be run outside of a browser. here is a link to my original post in the mac forums http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/macc...front-end.html

it was originally written for the folks in the mac community, however the app is being written in a way to allow for complete cross platform compatibility. i will post a link later when a get a better more stable version. hope you guys like what you see

Flex Interface

Funny that this post showed up now, as I posted something about this in the thread below. I've already done a basic music player with library support, a few visualizations. It's designed around a 7 inch touch screen so as to have large buttons, easy selections, and simple interface. Nothing real fancy, but useable. I am also using code behind practices, so the front end can just be changed by changing the mxml, which only contains visual elements. I've got a basic one up and running now, and am looking at ham radio control. I also want to do obd-II support for sure.

But I am mainly doing it for my own purposes, and am considering just open sourcing the whole thing as I go.

Let me know how your project progresses. It will be interesting to compare notes.

yeah i am kind of in the same boat. right now i have a decent music player, with cover Flow. i am working on some visualizations right now and a gps plugin. i am using adobe air for installation, so that the app doesn't have to be run inside of a browser. if you get OBD-II up and running let me know how you did it, that is something that has me pretty stumped on how to actually implement it.

Progress so far

Well I have a music player done that is quite functional. It has chooseable visualizations. Normal screen with song/artist/time. On that screen I also have stop and play/pause button. I also have a menu button that covers up the visualization with different options. I have show playlist, library (which takes you to a screen that contains all of the artists. You can jump ahead by alphabet, or by screen. If you select an artist, you can hit play and all songs are added. Additionally, you can press a different button, and get to the artist's songs. I have it organized this way since I have a ton of songs (I have around 20000).

I have OBD-II all figured out as to how to do it. I will be using a java based server that talks to the serial port and manages the protocol. The flex app will talk to this server and send commands/get responses and monitor ecu sent data alone. For now, I am just using a commercial program. I will probably keep that around for the reset and diag functionality. I just want a few dashboards in flex, for the standard things.

So over all, the project is going great in that I work all day, and just pick at it in the evening occasionally.

sounds very cool. im in the same boat as you working all day and coding bits and pieces at night. i also had the same idea for trying to implement gps in my flex app. of course i am doing most of my development in OSX so there is no gps alternative. it seems the only way to communicate to any connected preps is through an external call to a java app or something like that. i havent put any more thought or effort into obdII just because i don't have any connectors to my car for that purpose. sounds like your app is coming along great though. i would be interested in trying out if you have a compiled version that you would be willing to release. you can download mine and try it out here if you like it let me know what you think. maybe we could collaborate and make one really solid app. who knows. good luck with your development though.
