There's something cooler than wine out there that lets you run windows apps straight from Linux. I don't remember what it is though, but I remember the screenshots. MS word shortcut right on the linux desktop, and they fired it right up. Amazing. So now, maybe you won't even have to use wine.
EDIT: sorry guys, I'm retarded. I was actually thinking of wine, and thought wine was something else...
Damn.

Roadmap and gpsdrive don't offer any actual trip planning/navigation features, just mapping. Having the option of an integrated WINE session with Routis or something similar in it would be fantastic, for actual trip navigating.
By the way, I just found this thread, and I love the work you're doing. Once I get my system together (just trying to pick a HD) I'll get headunit installed and see what I can do to help (My coding skills are pretty rusty, but I think I can pick it up again)

Just found this thread, and can't wait to d/l HU and give it a shot. I am awaiting delivery of my new ride, and am hence extremely interested in the IBus capabilities-to-be of HU; I saw one mention of it earlier. How well would HU do without touchscreen capability - i.e. if it only has discrete messages passed to it? The IBus head units on the bimmers pass packet-based messages over the bus to indicate button/knob actions; if there was a way to have HU accept messages from a daemon watching for those messages on a serial interface (which is how most solutions link the IBus to a PC) then even stock BMW nav computer users could use HU on their 'real' head units, piping their PCs into the 'AUX' input on the factory system. Of course, I'm guessing the answer is "download the code and make it work, dummy!" ...in which case, I need to learn more about IPC in general. :-) Thanks to all for their efforts to date. Hm, gotta go order an Opus case, and an intelligent power supply, and an Epia board, and...heh.

Sorry guys, no updates yet. I've been cranking away in grad school trying to graduate. Also, with the great work veetid's done on Centrafuse, I'm kind of tempted to use that instead of HeadUnit in my own installation. However, if there is enough interest, I could be convinced to put some time into HeadUnit again (or at least help someone else pick up where I left off).

Centrafuse requires Windows
I've not touched C++ in years, and I've never coded with qt...but if you document your code I could try and work on it some
What do you use as an editor, btw? JCreator works great for Java...but that's Java.

I have yet to try out headunit (and refuse to complie qt into my installation right now, but i may play with qt-embedded in /opt) but I am gonna look through your code to see how faw along things are...
I think this is a sf.net project too, right? Maybe if you do like an open call for developers/patchers, we could get a good open source carputer interface going. I wouldn't mind sending in patches of code to the main tree every once in a while once I get going on my project, but as of right now I am stuck coding what qt would give me (except it is a 3d-capable interface that is cross platform). I still don't know if I am going in the right direction, but I have yet to submit my project to sf.net to see if I can get a good cvs/subversion server to put code on
anyway, gonna browse your code

The latest kernels provide a stable suspend-to-disk function that works like hibernate in windows. Also, its pretty easy to tweak the startup scripts in linux to get a sub 15-second boot time.

It uses Qt, so most of the code should work straight out of the box in OSX. The only platform specific class that needs to be ported over is the one that implements the media player interface. Why, were you thinking of installing a Mac mini in your car?

NoPistonPC didnt your mother ever tell you t ocomment your code?
I'm having a bit of a fiddle with the headunit code at the moment, I'm going to stick an EPIA based gentoo machine into my car soon so I thought I'd better make sure there is a nice Linux front end to use. HeadUnit is by far the best option so far. DashPC is perhaps the ugliest application I've ever seen
I'm not familiar with the Qt library but I'll try and work it out.

Hey I've been looking around for a while for a decent linux frontend, and this seems to be quite good. Im just waiting for all the librarys to build and going to install it on my laptop to test it out.
I can also help with the development if you still looking for people to code for you. I very fluent in C being a embedded software engineer and have done a bit of C++ (very basic) but im sure it won't be too hard to adapt to.
