Just started lookin at this "scene" a couple days ago, just found a link to this forum by accident. But have had a computer of one sort or another in my van for over 6 years now.

See lots of mention of meets along the upper eastern seaboard...any chance of arranging one in the Austin (or central Texas) area? Would anyone even show up? Dunno if there's anyone in this group livin down this way.

Errors

I got an error when I tried to run the program. It is a fresh install on a Via MI12000 motherboard. There isn't much on it except for frodo and the codecs and software to run it. When I double click on the icon, I get these errors.

When I click on cancel, this is what I get.

EDIT:Nevermind, thats what happens when you don't read the directions. I didn't run the bat file.

EDIT 2: By the way, freakin awesome now that I got it to work. Trying to figure out what to put where. Makes me feel like I have a real carPC now instead of a program running in windows (meaning the frontends)
thanks for all the hard work.
Kenny

glad you got it working, If i had more time I would clean up the installer to reg frodo's shutdown DLL automatically, I know thats annoying.

glad you like it, wish I had more time to build on it, I have a great idea on how to take it to the next level and started a re-write with an entirely differnt graphically skinnable GUI (no more MS-tabs) but then school started back up and with 18 credits and full time work I had to put it on hold. Plus I code mostly in Java for school so my mindset is not even in .net right now

hopefully things will lighten up soon, i miss working on this.

This is a step that noone has taken or even thought of. The functionality is awesome. I did have two problems, or things I guess. I made a shortcut on my desktop for the c drive. And after my making carshell the actual shell, I got an error message, but it let me bypass it. The main thing though was when the computer starts, notepad opens with some text that I didn't read, not sure what it is. I will make it the shell in the registry instead of the button to see if that makes a difference.

Oh yea, one more thing. I didn't use to have my icon to start windows before when starting the computer. Did that come from adding the framework, or is that the program. I can't figure out how to get rid of that. I like it when it boots and goes straight into the program, although it will be coming back from hibernation 99% of the time.

My main thing about opening up an explorer window is to add music files when that time comes which is why I have those shortcuts. But if I can keep that notepad from opening up, I can change it from being the shell real quick to do what I need since I don't do it that much.

It really is sweet, and really happy with it now. I honestly can't think of anything I would want different, just pretty freakin happy to have something like this.
Nice work. I don't miss college one bit, but enjoy it while you can.

hmmm, I will try to re-create that, do you remember if the error message is regarding the icon? I left alot of the error handling messages in that i should take out, likely its just telling you that it would not extract an icon from the file/link and you will see a button on the tab without an icon.

do you have a notepad link or exe on the startup folder? Or a link to a txt file? CarShell will automatically try to run any files associated program. so if you have a readme.txt in the startup folder for example carshell will run notepad to open it.

changing the program set to run as shell directly in the registery is no differnt from pressing the check box in carshell setup, because that is what carshell is changing.

go to start -> run in explorer and type in "control userpasswords2" then uncheck the box at the top that asks if you want users to have to login.
There is also an option in display settings -> screen saver -> power -> advanced -> require password when computer resumes from standby, you might want to uncheck that as well.

As for the asking for me to login, I already had everything unchecked. I ended up downloading tweakUI and did it that way. That little program let me take care of alot of other things.

As for the notepad, there was a link in my startup folder, which I saw before, but didn't think much of it. I didn't put it there, and it wasn't in my startup before. I just removed it and that fixed everything.

Now for opening up c drive, that is another story. I get an error that lets you continue. I put the screen shot below, and the text in the debug window. I think it also has an affect on the program though. After doing this, and I minimize it where I have the center button and the four buttons on the side, the little thing runs away from me like the mouse arrow is a magnet. It makes it real hard to hit the button to maximize carshell. Also when opening up the c drive, and I hit continue, it opens up behind carshell where I have to hit alt+tab to find it. This is when carshell is the shell.

It is definitely when I open up the C:/ shortcut, that the minimized thing will not stay in place. I havent' tried any other shortcuts. I have a shortcut for c on my desktop.

Everything else is cool, just opening an explorer window.
thanks again,
K
