Internet dection

Guys,

I've not found anything that does this so am writing my own util for my Car PC. The idea is that it detects an internet connection and then performs certain operations.

These may include

FTP
Email
Specific client / server (GPS tracking)

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Andrew

Edit: updated English, was reviewing a document whilst posting..

Very nice are you going to make your program search for the strongest wireless connection and auto connect to it ?

No, I intend to leave that to the OS / WNIC adapter software which in most cases already works pretty well. My tool is intended to be internet connectivity independent.

Whether you are using a GPRS connection or a CAT 5 plugged into your PC, the idea being that when your PC has an internet connection you want it to automatically do something.

Ok,

I have a version 0.1.. this is a BETA. It does no transferring of data yet, just the internet connection detection and writing to a log file.

Those that wish to help me test please try out and give me the log file it generates.

Also, please provide me with ideas on the activities that could be carried out when a connection is detected.

The zip file can also be downloaded from the website which is in my signature.

Thanks,

Andrew

What are you writing in Skippy? I started something similar in Delphi a while ago, didn't get that far though. I also wanted to have an option for it to dial a DUN connection for people with GPRS. Suggested options? Transfer a file and the ability to call a dynamic URL, this would be a great way to reansmit your current position back to a database or similar, this could be done through an option to launch another program when a connection is identified.

I'm writing in VB 6. I was just starting to look at the FTP side, but the calling an app sounds a great idea. I shall look into that now!

Can be downloaded from http://carpc.harteveldt.com and is also attached to this post.

New in this version is the support for executing up to 4 apps with a configurable delay between executions.

Is this going to be customizable? I.e. do email and not ftp etc. Maybe it can be incorporated into a skin and show a "online" status. Great for Phonco.

I agree, this would be perfect for updates on weather as well. Left you a message a couple of days ago in the RR forums asking if this is possible.

I have used netdetect calculator/notepad very cool.

That was the intention but due to the lack of interest I had not taken it any further. I shall try look into making some changes at some point.

BTW, my webserver is down at the moment (got hacked)... so am having to do a rebuild.

No interest???? Man I think this is cool. I can see using something like this to automate some of the carpc functions.

So..instead of you trying to find a wireless hub (starbucks, panera) and donating time to physically searching for a connection to update software, devices ad such…it automatically looks for a connection and does what it needs to? sends out whatever email youve typed up, ect ect..all the stuff just waiting for a connection? that would be great. do buisness and then just pull out and drive and let the puter do the sending....

ive been looking for a program to do this.. thats my biggest problem with all the frontends weather section. U have to manually get the updates, and 99% of the time i never remember to get the updates before i pull out of hte house.
