Inverter - Fire Hazard?

I've been using an inverter for a couple of years now and am wondering how hot is too hot. I have the inverter in my trunk sitting directly on the carpet. On hot days like today (90 degrees F) the inverter gets very hot. I can touch it for only about three seconds before I have to pull my finger off. Since the inverter is in close proximity to, and in some cases touching, carpet and other wires I'm wondering if any of the geniuses on this site who study such things can give me an idea whether there is a fire hazard at that heat level.

Thanks in advance.
